BLOCKSTREAM TELLS “WHITEHAT” HACKERS BUG IS FIXED, SAFE TO RETURN 4,000 BTC

The hackers who withdrew roughly 4,000 BTC from Liquid told Blockstream they would return the funds, but only after the vulnerability was fixed.

The entire negotiation has played out publicly through Bitcoin OP_RETURN messages.

The hackers initially offered to send “most” of the BTC back, before changing course:

“Please fix the bug first. The chain is under risk at latest commit right now. Make sure every node is patched. Then we will transfer the money back safely after confirming the fix.”

They also sent Blockstream encrypted details about the vulnerability.

Now, roughly two hours ago, Blockstream responded with a PGP-signed OP_RETURN message:

“Bridge nodes are patched, safe to return the funds.”

3,998.5 BTC remain in the hackers’ control.

The ball is now back in their court.

In any negotiation, the one who needs the deal to go through will end up doing it on the other man's terms.

Neediness is repulsive, and we've all felt it at one time or another.

The person who was way too into you when you weren't into them. The salesman being over the top and aggressive because he needed to close.

We find it repulsive because we're all looking for the best deal for ourselves, and when someone puts everything into closing you, it's a strong signal they don't have many other options.

That's spiritual power, having power over yourself, awareness of your own desires, and the willingness and ability to resist them.

You don't need to eat the food.
You don't need the woman.
You don't need the deal to go through.

You're okay with ANY outcome.

It's the Stoic practice, where you attach only to your level of effort and the quality of your attitude, and you release all pretension of being able to control or create outcomes.

From that place you come into full acceptance of reality, its uncertainty and its complexity, knowing that whatever outcome plays out, you will be okay with it.

That's spiritual power, and the man who is deepest in that game is the most powerful man in any room.
