My 13 year old daughter has talked for several years about how much she loved her 5th grade teacher. I asked her what she liked about her. Her response: “She liked US!” So simple… yet so profound. Kids gravitate to the teachers that like them. They can tell.

I appreciate empathetic educators. Their job is more stressful... because they feel the pain and struggles that their students endure. But their job is infinitely more rewarding... because they are the ones, who truly touch the lives of their students.

The measure of a school is not just how well students do on standardized tests, both whether or not kids love and appreciate learning. The latter is a better indictor of future success.
Sometimes, school is hard… for the kids AND adults. Teachers deal with all sort of challenges… from overcrowding, to unruly kids, to difficult parents. Staff members who rise above the adversity and remain positive are leaders... and they have a HUGE impact on the culture.
