When I say relationships are the center of education, I'm not talking about warm and fuzzy friendships. While care is crucial, it also involves respect, trust, clear communication, high expectations, and consistency. Relationships also require being direct when needed, providing honest feedback, and maintaining a focus on mutual growth. These elements together create a supportive and effective learning environment where everyone feels valued and understood, leading to better outcomes for students and staff. This is what relationships are all about, and if someone doesn't understand this, they may not fully grasp what education is truly about.
“Collective efficacy occurs when Ts in a school believe that, as a team, they have the power to help their Ss learn more effectively-and this belief is based on their own shared exp. of success. A culture of collective efficacy does not simply happen; it is built intentionally.”
This kindergarten class wanted to do something special for their deaf janitor.
So they surprised him by learning to sign Happy Birthday.

Tier 1 comes first.
It is THE priority if you want to see improvements in:
Achievement
Scores
Growth
Learning
Morale
Behaviors
Don't pour time, money or resources into 2 & 3 until you KNOW that 1 is what it needs to be.
It is 1, then 2 and 3 for a reason after all.
At WCSD, we believe in servant leadership as opposed to traditional heirarchy.
As servant leaders, our role is to support those individuals working closest to our students ... while asking for feedback along the way.
floor raisers vs. ceiling raisers
Floor raisers fundamentally want to make lowest common denominator higher. If the ceiling goes up, great.
Ceiling raisers fundamentally want to increase max(x). If raising the floor is part of that, great.
