Etkina - effective science involves more than knowing how to use models, but also when, why and with what cautions. #mimodphys14

[Greg Huizenga @huizengg]

#mimodphys14 Swack - Work defined as energy transfer between or within systems - not just in terms of F d cos 0. Very deep and rich article.

[Greg Huizenga @huizengg]

#mimodphys14 Van H - learning multiple representations and moving freely between them improve understanding and problem solving ability

[Greg Huizenga @huizengg]

#mimodphys14 Arons - to "understand why" we explain using an array of simpler, plausible, well-established ideas - the essence of modeling.

[Greg Huizenga @huizengg]

Jackson - Don't target the naive conceptions; help students construct appropriate models to account for the phenoms under study #mimodphys14

[Greg Huizenga @huizengg]

Arons 4.1 - 5; vectors are more than arrows that are managed with trig; students require lots of practice interpreting meaning #mimodphys14

[Greg Huizenga @huizengg]

#mimodphys14 - Modeling describes basic patterns that occur regularly - what role do the trad. equations play in describing these patterns?

[Greg Huizenga @huizengg]

#mimodphys14 mod atwoods machine-modeling helps build the conceptual framework to help students analyze situations with more than intuition

[Greg Huizenga @huizengg]

#mimodphys14 Arons ch 3 part 2: what is "g"? to which student simply replies "gravity". Yet, its understanding still evades all of us

[Greg Huizenga @huizengg]

#mimodphys14 arons ch 3 part 1: lots of student preconceptions about force that they're sure are correct; need convincing arguments

[Greg Huizenga @huizengg]

#mimodphys14 physics teachers and math teachers need to be "speaking the same language" when it comes to basic mathematics, e.g. proportions

[Greg Huizenga @huizengg]

#mimodphys14 Hake - students need to be led to understanding through experience and their own self reflection

[Greg Huizenga @huizengg]

#mimodphys14 Teacher expertise is essential if modeling is to have substantial impact on student learning. Must be in it for the long haul

[Greg Huizenga @huizengg]

#mimodphys14 chapter 1 - great experiments to teach forces!

[Greg Huizenga @huizengg]

#mimodphys14 Is it worth the effort to teach kids the at rest condition? Well... it does serve as a "foundation"

[Greg Huizenga @huizengg]

interesting read http://t.co/QdLpRuzUAt #mimodphys14

[Greg Huizenga @huizengg]

Arons - interesting that author strongly recommends requiring systematic approach to problem solving #mimodphys14

[Greg Huizenga @huizengg]

#mimodphys14 Two ways article - good summary at end... choices must be made regarding content coverage and promoting independent thinking
