Interesting.. Balogun was never in the wrong here.

He was challenged from behind, potentially fouled in the process, and was not looking toward the defender as he tried to play the ball.

This is what Belgium, and the entire world want to see him miss a game for. Shameful.

That is incorrect. There is an appeal process via the Disciplinary Committee, @ussoccer went through it and, in my opinion, the correct result was achieved due to an incorrect application of the VAR rules, general equity and past precedent.

As for Belgium, they should not be benefitted by a wrong decision nor should they want to play a short-handed team. All countries in a World Cup tournament should have confidence in their team and desire to beat an opponent at full strength, simple.

The defender initiates the tackle… he’s in front of the defender.

@Nick___Collins There’s a lot of genuine frustration and confusion about how a defender can initiate a challenge, knock another player off balance, and the player who was on the receiving end gets kicked out.

I can stick my foot in front of a car and break my ankle, it’s not the drivers fault.

US is possessing the ball, Balogun has position in front of the defender.
The *defender* initiates the challenge from behind, and the contact, which knocks Balogun off balance.

Messi is the initiator in his case.

Punishment is warranted when a dangerous action that endanger others.
But, what did Balogun do that was dangerous?

He was knocked off balance by a defender
