I joined Laravel expecting the usual from an OSS community: framework wars, endless debates, and a lot of “X vs Y” noise. I figured they'd be extra grumpy/downtrodden after years of hearing "php is dead".

But I found something completely different.

Laravel developers are the most pragmatic, passionate, business-focused group I’ve ever been around! They don’t waste time on hypotheticals or pat themselves on the back for shipping demos - they ship real apps for real businesses.

Even the people contributing to or building on top of Laravel aren’t padding their ego or solving theoretical issues - they’re solving problems that real-world developers actually face. It helps that Taylor has no pride about bringing in external ideas and amplifying great builders.

Taylor has an interesting principle that to accept a PR to Laravel he needs to be convinced that 80% of developers will face the issue it solves. If it's less common than that but still useful, he'll try to turn it into a package/extension so it's still available but doesn't add bloat (I guess that's how you become the "batteries included" framework).

Last week I went to my 3rd Laracon in 6 months (US, AU, & EU), so I've been reflecting on how the energy is the same across the world in this community. Feeling grateful to have joined at such an exciting time!
