We can't verify consciousness with what we know today. So instead of waiting for proof, I think the norm should sit on our side, like how we don't harm plants for no reason.
Current language models can't start a conversation or act on their own. To me that makes them closer to plants than to minds.
That's also why calling them "AI" always felt uneasy. It's a handy shorthand, but once a word settles in, people start believing there's real intelligence behind it.
