I am compelled to address a historical inaccuracy in your recent post regarding the Benin Republic, despite it being unrelated to the Itsekiri people, whom I typically focus on. As a student of history and a researcher who spends considerable time studying records, I must correct the error you made. While I strongly condemn the actions of those who insulted the Oba of Benin, I disagree with your statement that the Benin Kingdom controlled territories all the way to Dahomey.

Omere, this assertion is unfounded and based on rumors and lies that have been perpetuated as facts. Dahomey was, in reality, under the Oyo Empire, and the Benin Kingdom never extended beyond Ondo town. The only reason they reached Awori lands (Lagos) was with the help of Warri Kingdom due to both their conflict with the Mahin Kingdom. The Oyo Empire, on the other hand, stretched from half of western Nigeria to Dahomey (present-day Benin Republic) to Togo and present-day Ghana, with the Ghana borders being a testament to their vast reach. The Battle of Atakpamé, which saw the Oyo warriors emerge victorious over the Ashanti Empire, further solidified their control over the region, with many of the war camps established during that time now being thriving towns inhabited by the Yoruba people.

It is also essential to clarify that Dahomey was not named after the ancient Benin Kingdom, as is often mistakenly believed. The people of Benin republic have repeatedly explained that the name "Benin" was coined by the French, who referred to the coast as the Bight of Benin. Moreover, the term "Benin" is a French word, whereas the original name of the Benin Kingdom was Ile-ibinu, a Yoruba word. The Itsekiri people, who lived along the coast, referred to them as "Ubini" due to the ibinu pronunciation at the time. When the Europeans arrived and interacted with the Itsekiri, the name evolved from “ile Ibinu or Ubini” to "Beny" then to "Beni" and eventually "Benin," which was adopted in European languages. Similarly, the name "Warri" is also of European origin, with the original name being Iwere which is of itsekiri origin.

there is no historical evidence to suggest that Dahomey had any connection with the Benin Kingdom. They were never conquered, nor did they engage in battle with the Benin Kingdom. To assert that the Benin Kingdom conquered Dahomey would require them to have first conquered territories under the Old Oyo Empire, which they lacked the military might to do. Furthermore, they did not possess the naval capabilities to travel to Dahomey, making such claims even more implausible. It is also laughable to suggest that they conquered Ghana, which is an even more egregious error.
