I met a youngster last week and he asked me:

“How can you believe in Santokh when you are so ambitious?”

I think the confusion comes from believing that Santokh means wanting less. It doesn’t.

Santokh is not the absence of ambition. It is the absence of desperation.

You can want to build a great company, create wealth, change an industry, become stronger, travel the world, or leave something meaningful behind - and still be deeply content with what you have today.

The difference is subtle, but profound.

Ambition says: “I want to go further.”
Santokh says: “I do not need to hate where I am while going there.”

Ambition gives you direction. Santokh gives you peace on the journey. Without Santokh, ambition becomes a hunger that can never be satisfied.

You achieve one thing and immediately need another. You keep moving the finish line. The world calls it success; internally, you remain poor.

But Santokh without effort can become complacency. That is why I believe in both.

Sabar : patience with the process.
Shukar : gratitude for what already exists.
Sukoon : the ability to remain inwardly still while the world is moving.
Santokh : freedom from the belief that the next achievement will finally make you whole.
And Sidak : unwavering conviction to keep walking toward what you believe is right.

I can be intensely ambitious and still sleep peacefully. I can want millions and still be grateful for one meal. I can dream of building something enormous without believing that my worth depends on building it.

I can fight fiercely for tomorrow without being ungrateful for today. Perhaps the highest form of ambition is not wanting everything.

It is wanting to give everything you have to the journe - without allowing the outcome to own your soul.

Santokh does not ask you to lower your ambitions. It asks you to remove your attachment to them. Work like the outcome depends on you. Live like your peace does not.
