Freight rates are sky-high. Shipping #crudeoil from the U.S. Gulf Coast to China on a #VLCC cost more than $80 million earlier this month, double what it was in September and 5X a year ago. Today, we look at the unique combination of factors that are helping drive #freightrates to record highs.

Last month, we demonstrated high-rate alchemy: turning mercury into real, stable gold, beating CERN’s record by a factor of 10.
Last week, we enriched isotopes in the world’s most powerful plasma centrifuge, beating the Soviet record that stood for 40 years.
Now, we’re building a fusion reactor in San Francisco to achieve record power density.

We're a little late sharing this, but it's worth discussing all the same. September's Cass Freight Index ⤵️ showed another volume bump, beating 2025 for the 2nd straight month after 3.5 years of trailing annually. Specifically, shipments are up 1.9% y/y after a 2.3% monthly gain
📈 Spot Rates Hold Firm As Truck Supply Shrinks.
Spot freight rates stayed roughly flat last week even as load volumes softened, DAT and Truckstop reported, because truck postings are running 21% to 27% below year-ago levels.
That capacity squeeze has pushed linehaul rates roughly a third above last year’s, with dry van up 35%, refrigerated up 33%, and flatbed up 29%.
DAT analyst Dean Croke said flatbed pricing is running 26% above its nine-year seasonal average, well outside the historical range for this point in the year.
DAT’s national averages: $3.09 a mile for dry van, $3.66 for refrigerated, and $3.64 for flatbed, all down slightly week over week as falling diesel prices trimmed fuel surcharges.

Why container lines are heading back to the Red Sea

ANZ: “China appears to be back buying sizeable levels of #crude#oil. Weekly imports have reached 9.4mb/d according to ship tracking data. That’s down only 2.1mb/d y/y. The resumption of buying from the world’s biggest importer could spell trouble for the global oil #market. Its ability to cut demand earlier this year went a long way from buffering the impact of disruptions to Middle East supply. China could take many years to restocking those depleted stockpiles.”
