শুনে রাখুন, নতুন পশ্চিমবঙ্গে যেমন ধর্ষণকারী, নারী ও শিশুদের নির্যাতনের মতো ঘৃণ্য অপরাধের সঙ্গে যুক্ত ব্যক্তিদের রেয়াত করা হবে না, কঠোরতম শাস্তি দেওয়া হবে, ঠিক তেমনই বর্তমান সরকারের আমলে কোনো নিষ্পাপ, নিরপরাধীকে পিটিয়ে মারার অপরাধে যুক্ত সকল অপরাধীদেরও ভারতীয় ন্যায় সংহিতার বিধান অনুসারে আইনি ব্যবস্থার মধ্যে এনে কঠিনতম শাস্তি দেওয়ার ব্যবস্থা এই সরকার করবে। ভিড়ের আড়ালে লুকিয়ে থেকে সংঘবদ্ধ হয়ে অপরাধ ঘটানোর দিন শেষ। আইনি উপায়ে এমন অপরাধীদের শেষ দেখে ছাড়বে এই নতুন সরকার।

The noughties, 2000-10, is the only decade when the Indian rupee saw real sustained annualised appreciation against the US dollar (~300-400 bps.) Basically the rupee rose big time compared to the inflation gap with America.

From 1960 to 2025, it was the other way rest of the time. Ratio of India's PPP GDP to USD GDP went~ 1.5 to ~4.5. Right now even higher; only 1990s was briefly higher when India was much poorer. Now the ratio is supposed to fall as an emerging economy grows richer, but not if starting point was overvalued as we were in 1960. But now pendulum has overshot: we are very undervalued today.

The dollar cycle has turned down though it does not proceed linearly. Structural factors such as energy import intensity, services net exports, goods import substitution, comfortable forex, domestic financialisation continue to proceed and finally US exceptionalism itself is wobbling beyond cycles.

We are nearing a crescendo. I was early on this call though we have seen multiple once-in-century type pandemic/lockdown, war/energy, tariff/tech events and shocks which made this up-cycle twice as long as usual (there have been only two more; 1978-85, 1995-02 vs 2011-25). Yet the big picture does not change.

Given interventions of leading economists on this broad topic of India's current dollar growth, I think we must model significant real appreciation if we are talking of a generational perspective (say till 2047 or 2050) and even more so from a decadal/cyclical one.

If we have a 200bps inflation target difference (which may further fall) the rupee depreciating by 200bps over a long period is absolutely wrong analysis in my view from hereon. I would not be surprised to see the rupee in or around 60s in the mid-2030s, though consensus is twice of that. I think the consensus is badly wrong.

It is simply not possible to understand India's geopolitics/economics or growth story or investment opportunity over the medium term without getting the rupee right. And as Rakesh Jhunjhunwala said, I reserve the right to be wrong/early again.
