Locals of Sanjauli town in Shimla have been sitting on a hunger strike for three days

Their demands are legit -

- Immediately demolish a five-storey mosque structure in Sanjauli that was found to be illegal in govt documents 16 years ago! Court ordered for demolition 20 days ago

- Withdraw FIR on 4 women and 2 men for stopping migrants from using the illegal structure for namaz

- Cut water and electricity supply of the illegal structure - the minimum any admin should do when a structure is found illegal

Such a shame that residents have to sit on hunger strike for simply demanding that babus do their duty

These cases do not even belong in courts. When a govt survey finds a structure illegal, demolition should be automatic

This pattern of illegal communal land-grab is not a local problem. It is an internal security issue, a national security issue

So far only the administration in Sambhal has shown the courage to act swiftly and decisively

Shimla needs the same resolve. Bharat deserves the same resolve

Arnav Khaire, 19, was a first-year science student at Kelkar College, Mulund.

According to his father, he was travelling to college in a local train when a minor argument with a few passengers escalated into language chauvinism. They assaulted him for speaking in Hindi, an unexpected and deeply jarring experience for a teenager who had never faced such aggression.

The suddenness of the attack, the humiliation, and the fear of being targeted for something as basic as language created an intense psychological shock. Overwhelmed, Arnav got off at Thane, took another, and went home. Even hours later, he remained visibly distressed. He told his father he was scared, uneasy, and experiencing intense anxiety, classic signs of acute stress after a traumatic event.

Despite his father’s reassurance, the emotional aftermath was too heavy. Arnav couldn’t process the sudden psychological blow and died by suicide.

Now Arnav will never speak Hindi again. I hope that makes those chauvinists feel satisfied.
