The closing of Dawson's book is needlessly optimistic. How can you suggest humans can "build a more just, more biologically diverse world" after pointing the exact opposite behavior for a majority of the book? #engl551#draft
"Can capitalist society reform itself sufficiently to cope with the extinction crisis?...It is impossible in the long run."
Dawson speaks the truth.

In class someone made the comparison to Earthsea by ULG. I can't help but imagine this book as a return to that world. The specific treatment of race & the magic system, specifically. #engl551
The description of Essun's skin is intriguing. "ocher brown by some...olive pale by others." This ads to the separation from race and focus on power discrimination. (also reminds me of Dune, but that's not too relevant) #engl551
I don't like the interludes. It feels like NKJ doesn't think the reader is smart enough to notice what is happening. I think it also forces the reader's focus, maybe making the reader miss something else. #engl551
Maybe I am missing something, but I'm not sure how technologically advanced the world is. I don't think I've seen any modernity, but the use of words like "aerosolized" and "geomestry" suggest a scientific understanding rather than a spiritual, as expected in fantasy. #engl551
I keep trying to find an irl comparison for the guardians. Their depiction seems very specific. A group outwardly helpful, but actually abusive and manipulative toward those needing the help. Perhaps abusive private schools? #engl551
I just remembered that person comes back and saved the compass for the main character. So definitely not racism. But I still think this speaks to class as the character defied the larger authority to help someone that was nice. #engl551
What was this side eye supposed to mean? Was the person asking for a tip, the water left behind? Or is this a comment on racism? Either way this interaction said a lot about class and what is valued in this world. #engl551
In the absolute future humans are still using Gatorade bottles. It think this speaks to the longevity of plastics and corporations. Or maybe just my ability to recognize trash. #engl551
This line made me lol. In real life hypnotism is like gaslighting that *can* be therapeutic. Its frustrating to read a book that has such realistic characterization & dialog about biology, but the plot is reliant on a flatly wrong understanding of psych. #engl551
@NoahHazzze @Cassidy7788 If we're bringing music into this, I'd like to suggest Splendor & Misery by clipping. It tells the story of the only survivor of an uprising on an intergalactic slave ship. Could OB's world be close to slavery returning, even with space travel? #engl551

@MosgroveNichole I think thats a good comparison. At a certain point in TWD, can you still call it post-apoc? They have a society and are defending it, a sign of a healthy community. Is PotS post-apoc at this point? Or is the gov & community enough to say there is till structure? #engl551
