On this day one year ago, Churchill’s Citadel was published.
What followed - from critical acclaim, to international tours and becoming a bestseller - has been the most extraordinary year, and I am so grateful to each and every person who played a part in making it happen.✌️📔
Labour promised not to raise taxes. They did.
Labour promised to freeze council tax. They hiked it.
You can't trust Labour. Vote Conservative on 1st May to stop them.
🌳 Out and about campaigning with @ClaireCoutinho, @_Lisa_Townsend, and East Surrey @Conservatives ahead of the Oxted South by-election on 1 May.
🗳️ It can’t change who runs the council - but local people can send a message that they want lower taxes and better services.
🌍 Ministers will want to blame global headwinds for the UK’s declining economic outlook.
But this really is a problem of the Government’s own making.

❓Where are the promised increases in defence spending going?
In response to a question of mine, Labour ministers said there are “no current plans to procure additional tanks or armoured vehicles”.

Tyrrells crisps founder William Chase has slammed Labour’s decision to suddenly halt new applications for a farming scheme as “an environmental killer."

In just a few short months Labour have gone from trying to win rural votes to a war on the countryside.
It's been hard to keep up, but here’s a 🧵 on how they’ve gone from charm offensive to Defra being branded a “failing department”.
The abrupt closure of the sustainable farming scheme is a devastating blow to confidence in the agricultural transition, farm business incomes, and our hopes for meeting environmental goals. Ministers must increase the farming budget at the spending review and reopen the scheme.
I didn’t think this Labour government could show more disdain for British farming and the countryside - and then they go and do this.
After the Family Farm Tax, delinked payments, the NICS hike and more, they’ve now stopped this vital environmental scheme without warning, risking small, medium and tenanted farms’ financial collapse.
For now, Labour’s ‘free pass’ remains intact. But if green groups continue to turn a blind eye, they may find that it’s not just policymakers who lose faith in them – but their own supporters too.

🪖 Major political challenges lie ahead for the Government as they grapple with the spending trade-offs needed to fund the rising costs of defence.

Happy World Book Day! 📚
It is my first as a published author, and how wonderful that @AirMailWeekly review of 'Churchill's Citadel' has come out today, calling it "riveting" and saying "the author has a wonderful style, breezy yet authoritative". ✌️📙

A Labour peer has warned Keir Starmer he risks “turning the countryside into a no-go zone” for the party with its attack on farmers.
Nearly 200 of his MPs are in areas with at least part of it being rural, an analysis suggests.

Today, we have repeated our concerns to the Treasury about the impact of the Family Farm Tax on farming families; they don’t care.
This morally bankrupt position sits with this government, and, without change, ministers will reap the consequences.

The Prime Minister’s misguided Chagos Island deal could come at the steep cost of an entire Army brigade. At a time where we need investment in our armed forces the Government are undermining it.

Farming minister Daniel Zeichner has sparked fury after it was claimed he told a rural conference that farmers are "not high on the pecking order" of the government.
This comes a day after thousands of farmers protested against Labour's IHT raid.

📊 I’ve undertaken analysis of the Government’s own figures on the Land Use Framework.
🥀 They show Labour will force the equivalent of 12,000 farm businesses to close within a generation – and the reality could be even worse.

🗣️ Back in February 2024 I warned Labour’s green plans would force up to 20% farmland out of production - a move that could cost 40,000 jobs.
Now it is reported that they plan to do exactly this, putting even more pressure on food production👇

📈 If the Government wants to make their growth mission more than just warm words, they will need to challenge their own party’s priorities and rediscover the simple truth you can’t tax your way to prosperity.
