Andre Holland continues to be one of the most underrated & under appreciated Black actors of our generation & I want him to get his flowers. Also, the feature film
debut of Titus Kaphar. If playing near you, try to go support Black indie filmmakers. Exhibiting Forgiveness is out.

We need housing supply. Middle housing is about creating housing diversity in form. It’s not equitable or sustainable to preserve single-family density within our established communities or zone everything to mid-rise developments. The missing middle is sensitive, gentle density. It’s multigenerational and allows seniors and boomers to age in place within their existing communities. It also provides family-orientated housing, which is more affordable than single-family homes or duplexes.
14 years ago my wife and I sat at this bench and decided to move away from California.
We could no longer afford life here.
It was mid-2009. We were in the midst of the Great Financial Crisis.
My job was safe - but any prospects of my first bonuses as a real estate development associate partner were now years away. Our company’s pipeline was non-existent.
We loved life here. It felt like a dream.
Two kids from the Midwest living in one of the most amazing cities in the country.
But the run had ended. We were down to a few thousand dollars in our account.
So a few months later we tearfully departed. I’ll never forget driving over the Bay Bridge after winding through SF one last time.
Life is funny though. 14 years later we are again living what feels like a dream.
We stopped back in town. We are staying in the penthouse of the hotel a few blocks from here.
Leaving felt like a death at the time in 2009. But I’ve come to realize it was our rebirth.
Everything good that’s happened is because we made unpopular (“you’re moving where??), difficult decisions when they were needed.
We gave up good, but ended up with great. In life I’ve learned that’s what’s often needed.
Give up good to take a chance on getting to great.
I wish nothing but the same for all of you.
🧵: Over the last few years, I’ve seen family/friends from LA & Chicago make the move to PHX, AZ. None have lasted in the desert city for > 1 yr.
So last summer I traveled to the fastest growing city for Black folks outside of TX to understand why: https://t.co/M469jcuo8v
Of all my goals, building a career and business where I can be at my kids’ dance recitals and sporting events no matter the day or time, everything else be damned, is easily top 3.
Had a great time chatting with John about the ups and downs of founder life and detaching self worth from business success (both positively and negatively)
