Rotimi Amaechi has raised an issue that should concern every Nigerian who believes that bail must remain meaningful rather than become detention by another name.

Whatever anyone thinks of Malam Nasir El-Rufai politically, the principle is bigger than one man.

When a court grants bail but attaches conditions that are practically impossible for the accused to satisfy, Nigerians are entitled to ask whether liberty has genuinely been granted at all.

Bail conditions exist to ensure that an accused person appears for trial. They should not become an indirect mechanism for keeping someone behind bars indefinitely.

El-Rufai is not above the law.

If there are allegations against him, investigate them.

If prosecutors possess evidence, present it.

Let witnesses testify.

Let his lawyers respond.

And ultimately, let an independent court determine the case.

But punishment should follow conviction, not precede it.

That is why Amaechi’s intervention matters.

Today the argument concerns El-Rufai. Tomorrow, the same precedent could affect another opposition politician, activist, journalist or ordinary citizen without the prominence necessary to attract national attention.

Nigeria cannot demand strong democratic institutions while remaining silent when fundamental safeguards appear threatened.

Political disagreements with El-Rufai should not determine anyone's position on his rights.

Justice must remain justice even when the person seeking it is someone you dislike.

If bail has been granted, its conditions should be reasonable and attainable while adequately guaranteeing his appearance in court.

Let the case proceed.

Let the evidence speak.

Let justice take its course.

But liberty should never become a privilege available only when impossible conditions can be satisfied.

POST-OSUN STATE ELECTION

Dear fellow compatriots, please, do not get carried away by what happened in Osun state yesterday, neither get it twisted. No doubt, it gives room for excitement and real optimism, but it is by no means uhuru.

The El-Rufai School of Political Arithmetic & Orography had already scientifically permutated what would possibly happen in 2027, including the probable percentage of votes that President Tinubu (APC) will secure in the South West as well as the larger nationwide (states, geopolitical zones and regions) permutations and projections.

The permutations had already factored in the reality (even before yesterday) that based on ethnic and related considerations, a considerable population of those who voted for Adeleke and against the APC yesterday would likely vote for Tinubu in 2027, irrespective of political party affiliation.

Why The Excitement?

The excitement about Osun is majorly driven by the fact that it provided on-field insight and practical answers to a couple of pertinent questions that have bugged the minds of our pundits and indeed that of many Nigerians, thus:

▪︎ Would Nigerians be able to overcome the emotional, mental and physical lethargy caused by a deliberate weaponisation of poverty in the last 3½ years to still participate in the electoral process?

▪︎ Would Nigerians be able to overcome the disenchantment, disillusionment and apathy caused by the fear that their votes would not count and still come out to vote regardless?

▪︎ Would Nigerians be able to withstand and overcome the fear caused by fear mongering, insecurity, intimidation and mobilization of state resources in favour of the ruling party's candidate and still come out enmasse to vote?

These critical questions were answered to a satisfactory extent yesterday.

Yesterday was testament to the fact that Nigerians are ready to take their fate and future in their hands and resist all pressures and intimidation, and to defy all odds to come out and vote their choice and to defend their votes.

Yesterday, was proof to Nigerians that if we vote decisively and with a clear margin, stand our grounds and police our votes, it would be almost impossible for anyone to alter the results or rig the election.

This is what some of us democrats and progressives are celebrating as we project into 2027.

It gives cause for hope and optimism and we thank Osun people for that. There is a lot more work to be done but we have seen that it is possible to take back our country. Therefore, brace up Nigerians, let's keep hope alive and may God preserve us and our nation till 2027.

Footnote: I have noted the gerrymandering by supporters of the President and the APC who amplify the endorsement of President Tinubu by Governor Adeleke, including the "agreement is agreement" pitch by my brother Festus Keyamo SAN. I guess that 'agreement' includes 'shooting' at Adeleke and if he survives, then the agreement stands. What if he didn't survive it?

Well, Adeleke has succeeded in getting re-elected and he won't be seeking re-election again. Hope he truly keeps to the "agreement", and gets all Osun people to do same. In any case, our "the guy is gone" permutation already counted Adeleke on Tinubu’s corner. We will still leave it like that - as part of our statistical margin of error.
