SHOTS FIRED!! Here's what happened:
Abbas Haruna's wife alleged that he had been detained for about six years without trial, dating back to 2018. She made the allegation publicly on the Brekete Family programme, which generated significant attention.
On September 16, 2024, the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, ordered an investigation into the allegation.
By September 21-22, the Defence
Headquarters was publicly disputing the claim that Abbas had simply been illegally detained for six years. The military said there had actually been a General Court-Martial, and a video emerged showing Abbas resisting attempts by personnel to disarm/arrest him, with gunshots heard in the recording.
The military subsequently explained that the underlying incident involved Abbas allegedly disobeying an order during a military parade, resisting arrest and expending 16 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition. He was tried by a General Court-Martial from December 20, 2022 to February 7, 2023 and, according to the military, pleaded guilty to all three charges.
The court sentenced him to reduction in rank and dismissal with ignominy. The Chief of Naval Staff confirmed the sentences on September 19, 2024.
