A story from Vera Molnár came to my mind today, on the day of her 100th birthday. I shared this story with @HansDehlinger and @qubibien when we were working on the exhibition TECHNO TERRAIN. NATURE IN THE AGE OF THE METAVERSE with @kikanicolela and @objktone.
"We each sat down in a corner, on a small folding chair, and painted – or drew? I still don’t know what to say when it’s pastels; let’s say we painted – the Danube with the weeping willows. Of course I was deeply absorbed in my work, but I was always squinting at what he was doing. I was curious, telling myself that he must be doing better than me and that we had to learn things. And what did I see? This boy, to paint the trunk of the weeping willow (which was brown – what other color could a tree trunk be?), took a stick of ultramarine blue pastel, laid it flat on his paper and made a crrrrrrr, so a line two centimeters thick, all the way down the trunk. Ouch a triple ouch. I didn’t know what to think! Firstly I was terribly over by the beauty of this thing. The ultramarine blue as a tree trunk really took my breath away, like when you enter a fabulous place, the Sistine Chapel for example. And then I thought, this boy is totally off the wall. A tree trunk is not ultramarine blue. I was even worried that someone would see us and exclaim, „But this guy’s crazy, he should be locked up!“ And at the same time, I really, really liked it. He didn’t tell me Gauguin’s famous phrase: 'Green? Put on the most beautiful green of your palette; and this shadow? Rather blue? Don’t be afraid to paint it as blue as possible.' This struck me for life, it gave me the courage to transgress, to think a little differently. It was unforgettable."

I just came across the news that Vera Molnar passed away. Thinking about expressiveness using computation, her drawings are still truly inspiring and forever among my favourites. Here is one that I love, included in my thesis. And a picture of her by Francesca Franco @iamfrafra
No words can express the sadness and emptiness that the passing of #veramolnar leaves behind. Having known her and being part, even if briefly, of her life has been a true blessing that I will always cherish.
