Hair Pulled, Clothes Torn: Victim Narrates Harrowing Ordeal

16 Arrested for Brutal Assault on Two Persons Suspected of Child-Lifting

Police have intensified action in connection with the brutal mob attack on two social development workers and the public humiliation of a woman in Kalyansinghpur area of Odisha's Rayagada district, where they were suspected of being child-lifters. So far, police have arrested 16 persons allegedly involved in the incident and produced them before a court on Thursday. More arrests are likely as the investigation progresses.

Lost Their Way While Returning from a Field Visit

One of the victims, Suman Jha, a resident of Azadpur in Delhi, is working in Odisha under the SBI Fellowship programme with a social organization called Gram Vikas. Along with her colleague Arpit Sutaria from Surat, Gujarat, she had travelled from Daringbadi in Kandhamal district to Thuamul Rampur in Kalahandi district for an exposure visit.

While returning, they were using Google Maps to navigate when their scooter overturned near a pond close to Kandulguda village under Dhamunipanga Panchayat in Kalyansinghpur police station limits due to poor road conditions. Earlier, they had asked villagers for directions and distributed biscuits among children celebrating the Raja festival, which reportedly triggered suspicion among some locals.

Hair Pulled, Clothes Torn: Victim's Emotional Account

Villagers allegedly began shouting that the pair were child-lifters and surrounded them. Frightened, they attempted to flee on their scooter but met with an accident. An enraged crowd then chased and assaulted them.

According to the woman victim, they were severely beaten, her hair was pulled, and her clothes were torn. Despite repeatedly crying, showing her identity card, and explaining that they were not involved in child abduction, nobody listened. There are also allegations that she was stripped and publicly humiliated.

After receiving information about the incident, Kalyansinghpur police, with the assistance of local resident Balaram Bag, rescued the victims and initially took them to the Community Health Centre. However, tensions reportedly continued at the hospital, prompting Rayagada SP Raj Prasad and SDPO Gaurahari Sahu to reach the spot, disperse the crowd, and shift the injured victims to the District Headquarters Hospital.

Police have registered four separate cases in connection with the incident. Preliminary investigations indicate that around 40 to 50 people were involved in the attack. The SP stated that individuals who created disturbances at the hospital and those who took the law into their own hands are being identified through CCTV footage and will face strict legal action.

Family members of the victims have since arrived in Rayagada.
