Connecting Images

The art of photography is not exactly the art of making great images, it is the act of understanding the way we experience perceived reality.

In this line of thought, reading through a photographic body of work is not about extracting meaning from an image and then connecting it to the next one; it is about experiencing the notion of every image in the project existing all at once in the support they’re presented.

It becomes extremely important to know the language of things and spaces for this. We have to know how it feels to walk a gallery room, how it feels to hold a book, and how it feels to look at a screen so that we know what’s the way in which the images will interact between themselves and the way we are going to react to them.

Meaning in a series of photographs is amplified by making connections between them, but it’s not that a single image gets amplified by the next one. It is the general notion of the topic being explored becoming more evident as we go through more images.

Like a big puzzle being filled piece by piece, hinting at the existence of the whole image but never being able to fully complete, as by default, our perception of reality will always be incomplete.

Meaning is amplified by allowing us to imagine the possible realities that can be contained in the body of work. It becomes ours because the story is filled by our experience of things, and even if the topic is, undeniably, what the artist intended, the meaning, in photography, will always belong to the viewer.
