You don’t have to be an NSMQ champion to follow this path and graduate from Dartmouth College.
There are Ghanaian students with ordinary SHS backgrounds who can get into great universities abroad with full scholarships.
The biggest problem is that many students simply don’t know where to look, what they qualify for, or how to apply.
That’s the gap.

This was the feedback I got when I cold-emailed a potential supervisor in 2020.
I had asked a simple question: what would make my application competitive?
I expected a polite deflection, or nothing. Most cold emails get nothing.
Instead, a professor in the program sent back four sentences that I have used in every PhD statement I have reviewed since.
She said: explain very clearly
→ Why you want a PhD,
→ What you plan to do with it,
→ What specific questions you most want to study, and why,
→ and which faculty members you would most like to work with to get there.
That is the entire PhD statement.
Four questions. Everything else is supporting evidence.
Read them again and notice what is missing.
No childhood story.
No "passion for research."
No paragraph about the university's reputation.
Six years later, that email is still the clearest description of a PhD statement I have ever read, and someone wrote it in under two minutes while answering a stranger.
Two lessons in one: send the cold email, because sometimes the reply is a blueprint.
And when a professor tells you exactly what they are looking for, build the document around it.
If you are applying for a PhD this cycle, answer those four questions in one paragraph each.
Then look at what you have.
——
The four-question structure is the backbone of the PhD track in the Statement Lab on October 3.

Dear PhD scholars 🎓👨🏾🔬👩🏾🔬, let’s have an honest conversation about stipends. 💰👇🏾
You don’t necessarily have to disclose how much you earn 😅, but is your PhD stipend actually enough to live on? 🤔💵
If you’re single, can you comfortably get by without another source of income? 🏠🍲🚗
If you’re married 💍, can you realistically manage a family on the stipend? What if you have kids? 👨👩👧👦😭
For those already doing a PhD, what would you advise incoming students to look out for before accepting an offer? 🎓📩 Is there a minimum funding package below which you’d simply say, “My brother/sister, don’t try it!” 😂😭
I remember once visiting an MSc student who was sharing an apartment with a PhD student. 🏠 I became curious about the financial realities of PhD life, especially for someone with a family.
Also, please mention your country/city 🌍📍 if possible, because the same stipend can mean completely different things depending on the cost of living.
Incoming PhD students, bookmark this post. 🔖 The replies might save you from premium shege abroad. 😭😂🎓
PhD scholars, over to you! 👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾

PART 2- WASSCE results can get you a full scholarship abroad .SAT been optional
You just finished SHS and got your WASSCE results. Let me show you one school. New York University Abu Dhabi
If you have strong WASSCE results — 5As, 6As, 7As, 8As don’t just limit yourself to KNUST, Legon or UCC.
You can apply to NYU Abu Dhabi.
And SAT is optional.
But NYU Abu Dhabi isn’t only looking for straight As. They also care about what you’ve done outside the classroom leadership, extracurriculars, impact, intellectual curiosity and your personal story.
And this is where it gets interesting:
If you’re one of the highly competitive applicants, you may be invited to Candidate Weekend in Abu Dhabi on their campus and the city.
You don’t apply separately for Candidate Weekend. You apply to NYU Abu Dhabi through the Common App first, and selected applicants may receive an invitation.
For invited students, NYUAD covers participation costs such as flights, accommodation, meals, visa and transportation.
International students can also apply for need-based financial aid, and some students with high demonstrated need can receive very substantial aid.
So imagine:
WASSCE → Common App for application→ Candidate Weekend in Abu Dhabi → NYUAD admission + full scholarship
Don’t automatically reject yourself because you don’t have straight A1s either. Strong results and a strong overall application matter.
Part 3 We will talk more about different schools and how to use common app to apply to multiple schools for free
