Language is foundational to how children access, process, and retain learning, and it remains central to building inclusive and equitable education systems.

We’re pleased to see this perspective amplified by our Founder and Global Director, Prince Gideon Olanrewaju (@LanreShaper) in collaboration with UNESCO (@UNESCO).

In a linguistically diverse context like Nigeria, strengthening foundational learning outcomes requires intentional integration of multilingual approaches within both policy and practice.

At AREAi, this is operationalized through our FastTrack bilingual model of instruction, a dual language approach that involves using the indigenous language as a bridge to learn English. This approach not only improves comprehension but also supports smoother transitions across learning levels and environments.

We believe that scaling impactful learning outcomes will require sustained investment in bilingual models, teacher capacity, and system-level alignment across formal and non-formal education.

Language is more than a tool for communication; it is the foundation of learning and a bridge for intercultural understanding.

Today, we are taking you on our FastTrack impact journey beyond the Nigerian Border!

Our Country Director, Edidiong Simeon (@EdidiongSimeon_ ) along with our Global Director Prince Gideon Olanrewaju (@LanreShaper ) represented AREAi in Cameroon for UNESCO Confucius Literacy Prize.

In this latest highlight episode, she shares her perspective about the trip and her experience with us.

The UNESCO Confucius Literacy Prize is sponsored by the Government of the People’s Republic of China and recognizes contributions to functional literacy and leveraging technology for literacy development. This annual prize award which carries an endowment of US$ 30,000, a medal and a diploma, rewards outstanding individuals, governments and NGOs working to promote literacy for rural adults and out-of-school young people, particularly women and girls, was presented at a global award ceremony organised by UNESCO in Yaounde, Cameroun on the 9th September 2024 to celebrate International Literacy Day.

Yesterday was a pivotal day for us at AREAi, marked by the inaugural Consultative Meeting organized by our Centre for Digital Development and Innovation Research (CDDIR). The theme of the event "AI for Inclusive and Ethical Education: Advancing SDG 4 with Human-Centered Innovation", set the stage for a thought-provoking dialogue.

We were thrilled to host a diverse group of selected and qualified stakeholders, including representatives from Civil Society Organizations, educators, policymakers, and AI experts, who contributed their insights to the national conversation on AI’s role in education.

The dynamic sessions led by our Centre's Managing Partner - Omoniyi Lawson (@filiuslaw ) and our Principal Partner and Chief Executive Director - Prince Gideon Olanrewaju (@LanreShaper ), sparked meaningful discussions around identifying critical findings, addressing current policy gaps, and exploring opportunities for fostering equitable, ethical, and inclusive education.

Key focus areas included:
•Capacity Building and Teacher Development
•Data Protection, Privacy, and Child Safety
•Curriculum Development and AI Integration
•Partnerships and Multi-Stakeholder Collaboration

The conversations were truly enlightening, and the consensus reached will play a key role in shaping the development of a policy brief for a National AI for Education Strategy.

We hope that these efforts will ultimately influence policies that ensure AI enhances, rather than replaces, quality education for all learners—grounded in the principles of accessibility, fairness, and human-centered innovation.
