Do not go quietly.
Leadership's silence is a clear message. They want a quiet death for the franchise. On socials and in game, so later they can just say:
"oH, no oNe reaLLy CareD for The fRanChiSE anYMorE"
@Sony@Playstation@Bungie#WeWantDestiny3
Alright, so. My sources (Bungie, not Sony), on the "Sony revenge" storyline:
- The impression is that this reported info *probably* comes from PlayStation employee observers, not anyone high up with significant knowledge of leadership's mindset.
- Some at PlayStation have "publicly wondered" why D2 is ending support, but keep in mind there are like 12K people working there.
- This is almost entire financial, simply Destiny 2 cost more than it made. Math. Cruel math, but math. No one at Bungie has any belief this is some "revenge" idea.
- It is obvious to everyone Bungie has not performed well and it is not exactly Sony's golden child. But this idea that Sony is blaming Bungie for Concord and all the rest of the live stuff is a huge reach. Sony isn't doing this to "punish" Bungie for some transgression via its live service plans or game underperformance.
- Despite atomizing Destiny 2 support to the point where there won't even be hotfixes, there are zero plans to wind down actual servers.
So take anything too hyperbolic with a giant pile of salt. Like the basics may be true, Bungie didn't live up to what Sony wanted, some employees working at PS may not understand or like this move, but this isn't as cloak and dagger as it's being portrayed. It's corporate, albeit that is obviously its own kind of bad. I'll probably have a piece or vid on all this tomorrow, but I see this spreading like wildfire.
I previously had the belief that Sony wouldn't shut down Bungie because of how bad a look it would be. Lots of cuts, restructuring etc. sure but not shutting them down.
After this though? I think that's where it's headed and honestly I pray for the remaining devs and Marathon.
🚨NEW: Destiny 2 Monument of Triumph's massive player surge and positive reception have not "moved the needle" at Bungie as significant layoffs are still expected - Report: https://t.co/vItwGtKRob
It's ALWAYS some petty fucks who have way to much god damn money but relentlessly pursue more regardless of how it will affect thousands of careers and the enjoyment of millions.
Every single fucking time.
This stopped looking like a business decision a while ago. Destiny is profitable. Bungie is valuable. Walking away from both isn’t the market talking — it’s Sony choosing to burn down an era rather than admit any part of it worked.
To the executives, upper end of @Sony :
If this is true,
Seriously go fuck yourselves.
If even Playstation is pushing back, then it should ring a bell you're making the most retarded decision imaginable.
You are going to kill Bungie, then complain about the money.

I’m playing and streaming this game for as long as I can. Destiny 2 is fresh in ways it hasn’t been since Forsaken. I don’t say that lightly.
These devs have done a stellar job under impossible odds. D2 deserves more than to exist as a mere time capsule…
and we want Destiny 3.

This situation is just so insane. Even people at PlayStation are pushing back against this decision :/
The execs at Sony are just disgusting. Greedy and terrible people that have no care for anyone but themselves.
