The Raulane festival, Himachal.

Locals believe that in winter, when the cold turns unforgiving, celestial fairies called Saunis descend from their heavenly palaces to watch over the villages. They guide, they safeguard, and bring a quiet reassurance the community depends on.

Raulane is celebrated to honour them. Two men are chosen as a symbolic couple, the “bride” (Raula) and the “groom” (Raulane). They dress in heavy Kinnauri woollens made for the harsh cold. Masks veil their faces, gloves hide their hands, the idea is to transform a human into a ritual figure, an intermediary between the people and the Sauni spirits.

The central moment unfolds at the Nagin Narayan temple. The two enter in full attire, offer prayers, and begin a slow, symbolic dance. Villagers believe this dance opens a channel between humans and the Saunis. Versions of this festival appear across the Himalayan belt, each region adding its own flavour.

For years we’ve been bombarded with the same refrain:
“There are too many people. The planet can’t handle it. Overpopulation!”

Sounds dramatic.
Great for panic, conferences, and new taxes.
But once you look at the numbers, it boils down to one thing:

Hysteria disguised as science.

How much space do 7.3 billion people actually take up?

Someone once decided to stop arguing feelings and start doing math (#TimUrban from Wait But Why).
And suddenly the doomsday narrative collapses.

Take all 7.3 billion humans.
Stand them close together — not crushed — about 10 people per square meter.

Result: you need a square of 27 km by 27 km.

That’s:
Smaller than Bahrain
Smaller than New York City

In fact:
The entire world population fits inside one city.

Turn it into a building — a cube a little over 1 km tall and 1 km wide — and everyone fits inside.
Yes, literally: the whole human race inside one cube you could drop into Manhattan.

And no, that’s not a metaphor.
It’s just math.

The word “overpopulation” is usually deployed as:
