#Somalia has decided not to renew the mandate of the UN Secretary-General's envoy—otherwise known as the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG)—and the UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (@UNSomalia), which the SRSG leads under a mandate from the Security Council.

This decision — after 30 years of the SRSG's pervasive involvement in Somalia’s politics under the guise of state and peace building — marks a significant milestone in Somalia's long journey and arduous efforts to regain full sovereignty.

Somalia will assume by 1 January 2025 security responsibilities from the African Union Mission (@ATMIS_Somalia), which has supported stabilization efforts since 2007.

Recently, Somalia successfully secured the lifting of a 30-year arms embargo and also achieved debt forgiveness through a rigorous process.

The decision is not a bombshell or difficult to comprehend. All UN agencies such as WHO, UNDP, UNICEF, or WFP will continue their work in Somalia as usual, as they do in other countries.

The departure of the political and omnipresent SRSG is beneficial for Somalia. That is the considered view of Somalia’s elected officials.

The support the international community has provided to Somalia is appreciated, and the beneficial work of @UNSomalia over the years is acknowledged with gratitude by Somalia’s attached letter to the United Nations.

Also, the sacrifices of @ATMIS_Somalia are recognized and will be memorialized in the annals of Somalia's history.

Somalia and her people are HOWEVER tired of internationally appointed co-pilots.

It is as simple as that.
