Plants talk and defend themselves with a dynamic lexicon and arsenal of chemicals - sometimes biosynthetic enzymes offer a way to make predictions about these compounds. Sometimes, not!
New methods to study the impact of non-canonical players in metabolite regulation can help!
Looking for a great read that will make you think about the interdependent nature of plant volatile metabolites?

Wrote this when I first started grad school. It’s about struggling to communicate my science with my parents who speak a different language. Now that I graduated, I figured I would get it out there. Thanks @xylom for the platform! #FirstGen#WomeninSTEM https://t.co/KAh2MZ5D01
@CharissaB @kasson_wvu @another_ant_guy@thienthanhtrinh @naubinhorth @zombieantguy @joaofungo @zombieflied @fungolution@mbeisen@hyphaltip@VeraIDRos@FuSchmu I second this! We had to wear a lot of hats and reach into different specialties of biology to propose these hypothetical scenarios by which (putative) fungal effectors and ant responses might connect. It'd be great to hear what different expertise and perspective brings.
@CharissaB@another_ant_guy@thienthanhtrinh We have an exploratory ‘omics project that might benefit from a broad range of eyes on it, and, we hope already offers food-for-thought on parasitic manipulators.
But, I'm also a fanboy of peer-review and the pedantic gears of the scientific process, so feeling a bit conflicted.
Authors and readers that use #bioRxiv - I'm curious about your thoughts and experiences, has the platform been useful and do you recommend it?
Our team (including @CharissaB@another_ant_guy@thienthanhtrinh) is considering uploading an early version of a manuscript to bioRxiv.
The Sharanowski Lab @UCF is looking for an MSc. or Ph.D. student interested in Molecular Phylogenetics or Bioinformatics for the Fall of 2019. Applications are due January 15th (It's last minute I know!). If you have any questions feel free to message me! https://t.co/ZVpgaSiNEZ
I am looking for grad students to join me at UCF in Orlando in Fall 2019. Please DM if you’re interested in studying carbon cycle dynamics (through models), or RT if you know someone who'd be interested. Application deadline for graduate programs at UCF is January 15.
