What do the inattentionally blind see? In by far the largest empirical project I've been involved in, @NartkerMakaela finds striking sensitivity to the colour, shape + location of "unseen" stimuli, as well as substantial bias not to report it. Check her pre-print out below 👇👀🦍
Congratulations to @chazfirestone of @JohnsHopkins on receiving the 2024 Joseph B. Gittler Award!🎉 Dr. Firestone has made an incredible impact in the philosophical foundations of psychological knowledge, and we're proud to give him the recognition he deserves.👏

Started reading my (free PDF!) of Nick Shea's Concepts at the Interface this morning. Already evident how deeply informed & deeply thought out a book it is -- philosophical cognitive science at its v best. Want to think about thinking? Download it here: https://t.co/7Utjf28xoh

@NeilLevy10 @chazfirestone @NartkerMakaela There is of course bilateral patient TN who does navigate using his blindsight, at least in this video: https://t.co/qqKbKRqpiE. But he is very understudied and there are lots of questions about how his performance is mediated + what consciousness he might or might not have.
@NeilLevy10 @chazfirestone @NartkerMakaela It's a v interesting question. But I don't think we have a clear comparison which shows humans don't/can't adapt. Blindsight in humans is rare + almost universally unilateral so there is little incentive to learn to exploit severely + qualitatively degraded vision unlike chimps.
@chazfirestone @NeilLevy10 @NartkerMakaela My own view, both here and in blindsight (see: https://t.co/JlaeuODkW5) is that it's degraded/partial awareness which is in principle reportable (witness the forced choice reports!) but not reported for reasons like underconfidence given the nature of the vision.
Sensitivity to visual features in inattentional blindness https://t.co/z9P74UMznx by @chazfirestone@ibphillips et al.; "the strongest evidence to date of significant residual visual sensitivity in IB, and even cast doubt on claims that awareness requires attention"
It's @VSSMtg week! So excited to share this year's projects from the lab, including brand new research directions and some deep dives on foundational issues.
