When I newly got married, my mother-in-law came to stay with us for a while.

There was one thing she always did.

Whenever food was served, she would ask, “Nwam eriela nri”
Meaning “Has my son eaten?”

At first, I didn’t think much of it. After all, that’s her child.

But one particular day, I had gone to the market, come back tired, entered the kitchen straight away, cooked, and served everyone.

By the time I finished dishing her food, I was exhausted.

She called me and asked the usual question:

“Has my son eaten?”

That day, I wasn’t in the mood to keep quiet.

I looked at her and said,

“Have you asked me if I have eaten?”

“You saw me leave for the market. You saw me come back and start cooking immediately. You have not asked if I have rested, if I have eaten, or if I’m okay. The only question is whether your son has eaten.”

I told her, “I know he’s your child, but am I not also your child now too?”

Immediately, she apologized.

She said, “No, no, don’t say that. You’re my last born now. You’re my baby girl.”

I told her, “I don’t feel like a baby girl right now.”

We talked about it, and that was the end of it.

Beautifully, what Dr Aisha has described is how memorization is done.
This was what my aunt did in Ilorin.
This was same thing what my aunt did in Lagos.

All of this started the way she narrated it. A regular Mallam comes home to take them on memorization. But it was never enough.

Why? There was no intensity. There was no structure and the accountability was diluted.

Remember we are talking about kids who will watch Oduma and Friends, Naruto and co after Tahfeez.

We knew early on that we won’t get what we wanted. So withdrawing them from conventional school was the best decision my both aunty made.

Now, the first one will be completing his second year soon. The second one will be returning to conventional school too soon. Both will be returning as Hafiz-l-Quran with a sharper brain than their peers.

One lesson we must learn when training kids: When the going gets tough, you need to take tough decision. Life’s journey is never easy and you must be ready to trade off some comfort to get the best version of them.

Many people have asked how my children were able to memorize the Qur’an, so I thought I’d share our journey.

This is simply what worked for our family, and I pray it benefits someone.

Our children started memorizing the Qur’an from a very young age. They attended regular Tahfiz classes alongside their conventional schooling, just as many children do.

However, there came a point when my husband and I felt we needed to make a bigger commitment.

At the time, our eldest was in JSS 2, while the second had just completed primary school. We made the difficult decision to withdraw them from the conventional school system and enroll them in a full-time Tahfiz programme.

It wasn’t because we didn’t value western education. On the contrary, education has always been important in our family. Both my husband and I hold PhDs, and some of my friends couldn’t understand why someone with my educational background would choose this path for her children. They would ask, “After all your education, why would you do this?”

My answer was always the same: In shaa Allah, they can also earn a PhD one day. But before any academic qualification, I want them to have a PhD in the fear of Allah 😄

If they know Allah, understand His Book, and build their lives upon it, then every other form of knowledge becomes much easier to pursue. As a parent, that foundation also makes my own work much easier.

Once we made that decision, we became fully committed to the process.

Their Tahfiz school began around 6:00 a.m. and usually ended around 6:00 or even 7:00 p.m., after Maghrib.

It was an intensive programme, but the school itself was very organised.

They had a structured curriculum with clear memorization targets, so we always knew what each child was expected to complete within a given period. That structure made it easier for us to monitor their progress and support them at home.

The school also played its part. If a child fell behind, they provided additional support. During Ramadan and some special periods, selected children would even stay overnight at the school for extra revision and memorization. Their teachers were genuinely invested in helping every child succeed.

Our responsibility as parents began when they returned home.

Every day, we woke them up about an hour before Fajr for revision. Those quiet moments before dawn became one of the greatest blessings in their memorization journey.

When they returned from school in the evening, they ate, freshened up, rested briefly, and then around 8:30 p.m., their home mallam arrived. For about an hour, he revised and tested everything they had learned that day before they went to bed to prepare for the next morning.

We also tried to eliminate unnecessary distractions. Television was almost nonexistent in our home. Sometimes we went as long as six months without renewing our subscription. My husband and I were never really television people, so this wasn’t difficult for us. The younger children had tablets for age-appropriate cartoons, but those in Tahfiz had very limited screen time.

Although we withdrew them from conventional school, we didn’t neglect their academic education. Fridays were free, so we employed a lesson teacher who came every Friday morning to teach Mathematics, English and Science.

Interestingly, our lesson teacher was a Christian. After some time, he said something that has stayed with me. He told us, “Whatever you people are doing must be a brain booster because these children are exceptionally good with their assignments.” That was reassuring because it confirmed that memorizing the Qur’an had not hindered their academic development. If anything, it had strengthened their discipline, concentration and ability to learn.

BUA ESTATE IS MASSIVE - The deeper I dig into Nigeria's real estate market, the more I realize how little most of us actually know.

Especially those of us looking in from the outside.

I spent a good part of my weekend studying some of Nigeria's largest real estate developments, and one project that kept me thinking was BUA Estate.

I must say, my findings were mind-blowing.

The vision. The scale. The capital. The planning. The infrastructure. The execution.

Projects like these operate on an entirely different level.

As I studied them, one lesson kept echoing in my mind...

Not all of us are called to become real estate developers.

Developing an estate is far more than buying a large piece of land. It requires enormous capital, years of planning, regulatory approvals, infrastructure development, technical expertise, risk management, and the operational capacity to deliver at scale.

It's a completely different game.

And that's perfectly okay.

One mistake I see many people make is rushing to register a real estate company simply because they want to "enter real estate."

But here's what I'm learning...

You don't necessarily need to own a real estate company, especially if your goal isn't to become a long-term developer.

Instead, partner with reputable developers and established real estate companies.

Leverage their projects, their credibility, their systems, and their commission structures.

You'll earn while you learn, build strategic relationships, gain industry experience, and create wealth without carrying the enormous financial and operational burden of developing an estate yourself.

The more I study this industry, the more convinced I become that real estate is not just about ownership, it's about positioning.

Sometimes, the smartest business move isn't to build another company.

It's to build the right partnerships.

Back in 1996, as Graduate Assistants at ATBU Bauchi, an elderly professor walked past us wearing shoes so worn out they looked like they had sworn never to touch the ground again, paired with what he said were his daughter's NYSC socks. We greeted him, then stood in silence for about five minutes. My friend finally said in Hausa, "Wadannan fa su ne manyanmu, kuma nan gaba su muke so mu zama?" ("So these are our seniors, and this is what we hope to become?")
That day, we decided we would find businesses alongside our academic careers. By Allah's grace, we both eventually became professors.
The lesson remains relevant today: in Nigeria, many professionals need a legitimate source of income beyond their profession. May Allah continue to bless us all and make the path easier for everyone climbing the career ladder. Ameen.
