Acute malnutrition (IPC 5) & food insecurity (IPC 4) are worsening. Children under five & mothers are most exposed.

@UNICEF must lead urgent, integrated response: expand nutrition sites, scale health & WASH services.

Famine is preventable—early action saves lives.

Today,visiting Burhakaba with a humanitarian delegation to assess the escalating risk of famine—families face urgent hunger and displacement. Immediate collective action is vital to prevent catastrophe.

Burhakaba district faces risk of widespread hunger crises unless urgent, large scale humanitarian intervention is delivered without delay.

Communities in Burhakaba District are at IPC food insecurity Phase 4 (Emergency), with acute malnutrition already at IPC Phase 5 (Critical).

History warns us: Burhakaba has endured some of Somalia’s worst food crises—the 1991–1992 famine, the 2011 famine, and the 2022 projected famine risk.

Today, the same district is once again on the brink, with compounding shocks driving families toward catastrophe.

The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs of South State of Somalia urgently appeals to Somalia’s Federal Government, donors, UN agencies, NGOs, and humanitarian partners, to immediately scale up emergency nutrition, healthcare, and food assistance.

🚨 Ministry urges the Federal Government to issue a National Drought Disaster Declaration to scale up humanitarian response and highlight the crisis to Somali people, donors, UN agencies, and NGO communities.

🌍 Meeting recommends on the UN SRSG James Swan & DSRSG/HC @GConway_UN to advocate for Somalia’s inclusion as a top humanitarian priority in 2026 within the UN System and among international partners. @UNTMIS_

🙏 Appreciation goes to the #Donors of Somalia Humanitarian Fund @shf_somalia for its timely $20M contribution, playing a vital role in alleviating the crisis and strengthening ongoing support for vulnerable populations in five districts of South West State. #Solidarity

Somalia Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) exists at the federal level, its current operational capacity remains insufficient to independently manage a crisis of this magnitude.

In addition, SoDMA’s support has not been fair or proportionate to our State. Despite assistance allocations being guided by assessed needs, South West State received only a minimal and inadequate share, which does not reflect the scale and severity of its humanitarian challenges.

The following is the summary of the Ministry Press Release today:

South West State has made the humanitarian crisis its top priority, with President @Laftagaren backing the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs for a coordinated response.

The Ministry recommends to President of Federal Republic of Somalia to elevate responding this crisis as #1 National Agenda priority by leading resource mobilization, convene high level summit in Mogadishu and ensure timely flow of resources to States.

(SoDMA) is in place at the federal level, its operational capacity is insufficient and not in a position to independently lead a response of this magnitude.

To strengthen local response, SWS will activate District Emergency Response Committees and coordinate closely with OCHA, clusters, ABC structures, and CELL meetings in Baidoa for rapid, real‑time action.

The current Humanitarian Crises in Somalia is urgent and worrisome.

Today in Mogadishu, I met with @OCHASom Deputies Mr. Blaise Kabongo & Mr. Rene Nijenhuis.

We discussed South West State urgent humanitarian needs, progresses made and addressing any challenges to assure humanitarian assistance reaches our vulnerable communities.

I appreciate @UNOCHA for supporting localization and advocating on our behalf for better and coordinated humanitarian services.

Anticipatory Action in the eyes of @SoDMA_Somalia becomes meeting held in Mogadishu.

It’s time @SoDMA_Somalia and #UN partners understand this is not time for meetings and waste resources in Mogadishu.

Somalia is currently facing a humanitarian crisis, prompting UN agencies and international partners to be more cautious about how and where resources are allocated.

The meeting with the Ambassador @EU_in_Somalia led by our president @Laftagareen key topic discussed included in the areas of Security Affairs, the Development of Social Services, and Projects.

In addition the humanitarian crisis in South West State was highlighted as an urgent concern.

South West State also expressed gratitude to @eu_echo Somalia and its leadership for their ongoing support.

Ambassador @FrancescaDM was requested to advocate for increased funding to address the worsening humanitarian situation.

In Nairobi met with Rineke van Dam, the Regional Humanitarian Coordinator at @NLinKenya to discuss the deepening humanitarian crisis in South West State.

📊 134,970 children (32% of Somalia’s #SAM caseload projected to face Severe Acute Malnutrition (Aug 2025–July 2026).

⚠️ Emergency #food insecurity to surge 51%—from 150K to 227K people (July-Sep to Oct–Dec 2025) respectively.

🙏 Thankful to @DutchMFA and @NLinSomalia for funding @SHF_Somalia, which targets programs supporting the most vulnerable. The #SHF model is vital for rapid response.

🤝 Appreciated the Dutch Relief Alliance work & the Government of #Netherlands for their continued, multifaceted support.

Concluded the meeting by emphasizing the need to closely #monitor how the humanitarian situation evolves in the coming months, given the current below-average #rainy season.

Honoured to join the Ministerial delegation from South West State #SWS for a productive meeting with the Embassy of the @NLinSomalia where we were warmly received by the Deputy Ambassador, her Excellency, @Laurie_V_.

The engagement provided an opportunity to showcase key Netherlands-supported programmes in #SWS, notably the #Saameynta Program, which is driving progress on durable solutions for displaced communities.

We also shared updates on progress made in the security sector and public service delivery while also discussing ongoing humanitarian challenges and areas where sustained collaboration remains critical.

We sincerely thank the Government of the @NLgovernment_ for its continued support including through the Somali Humanitarian Fund @shf_somalia, which continues to make a meaningful impact on the lives of vulnerable communities in #SWS and across Somalia.

In #Dubai, on the sidelines of the International Humanitarian and Development Conference and Exhibition #DIHAD, I met with @Steve49Anderson and @CatGalluzzi the leadership of @WFP Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Region.

We discussed strategies to sustain humanitarian assistance in our Country, focusing on strengthening #partnerships to enhance service #delivery and create #synergies across programs to accomplish #zerohunger

I briefed them New #Safeguarding #Humanitarian #Assistance Law of South West State of Somalia which is a groundbreaking initiative designed to prevent the aid #diversion and #misuse of kind of assistance, ensuring aid reaches those who need it most and as it represents a significant step toward strengthening humanitarian #governance and fostering an open environment for aid #delivery.

I also took the opportunity to extend our deep appreciation for @WFPSomalia life-saving services to our people during this critical period. Their continued support is vital to the #well-being and #resilience of our communities.
