New York's SAFE for Kids Act will create a digital ID infrastructure under the banner of “protecting kids.”

The bill was passed in 2024, but final rules were announced last month. SAFE for Kids restricts algorithmic feeds for minors, but to enforce it, platforms must first determine which users are adults.

According to the rules, possible methods include ID, photo/video analysis, or cross-checking email addresses and phone numbers against age-related information.

It’s not just a rule for children...this will apply to every user....age-screening system for everyone who wants ordinary social media features.

Strangely, the rules require the platform to obtain a minor’s approval before it can even seek parental consent...so the child effectively controls whether the parent is brought into the process at all.🤔

The final rules take effect January 25, 2027.
