Asked about drug policy and treatment in the Downtown Eastside, BC Conservative leader Lorne Doerkson said the answer to addiction is “not free drugs.”

Doerkson called for greater investment in housing and treatment, but said he could not yet provide a cost for the party’s approach.

He was born and raised in the Lower Mainland (New West and Surrey).

After moving to Williams Lake he was a competitive rodeo participant for over five years.

He is one of the most liked and respected MLAs on both sides of the House and has served as Caucus Chair and Deputy Speaker.

He has been a publisher, business person and financial analysis and advisor.

A straight shooter who uses a sense of humour and demonstrated competency to bring people together.

The more people get to know him the more they will like him.

He won his riding last election with 70% of the vote.

I’ve been in communication with Lorne Doerkson last night and again this morning. I have pledged my unequivocal support as he leads us in the weeks ahead.

We are so fortunate that he was willing to accept the mantle of leadership in the shadow of a now-inevitable election… a responsibility that until a mere day or two ago wasn’t even a glimmer in the back of his mind.

David Eby has underestimated two critical things: the capacity of opposing political forces to unite when he provides them the focus of an unnecessary, cynical election call, and the appetite of the public to embrace an opportunity for change; to break the pattern of decisions that have hurt so many families and pulled away the “welcome mat” in BC for investment, job creation and opportunity.

Two years in, one-seat majority, a budget that already embarrassed itself, and a property-rights mess his government helped cook — then the Conservatives imploded, and suddenly the province needed “stability.” That is not leadership. The fire is property title. His government sold UNDRIP theatre and Haida “templates,” then acted stunned when a court put Cowichan Aboriginal title above fee simple on private land in Richmond. Mortgages stalled. Sales froze. Homeowners got letters saying the deed might be junior to someone else’s claim. Then he posed as the defender of private property — after stacking the kindling

Now he wants a snap vote a week after municipal elections, while the opposition is wounded on the floor

And he had the gall to say this: “Living through wildfire season. Even if you never expected the fire to reach you… when you smell smoke, you don’t sit and wait… You cut a line through the forest… You build a firebreak.”

You smell smoke, David, because you lit it. The firebreak is not Trump. The firebreak is an October 24 ballot designed to trap people in the house before they inspect the basement

Yet this Liberal government wants to spend $90 billion on Alto which is three times what Ottawa committed to transit projects across Canada over the last decade serving millions, and yet, Alto is projected to carry just 66,000 passengers a day by 2055.

3 times a decade of federal spending on transit, but only 2% of the daily users.

Canadians work hard for their money. Government should work just as hard to spend it wisely.
