I just randomly remembered when Olisa Agbakoba advanced one of the funniest arguments ever witnessed in criminal law.
So on the 24th of August, 1981, in Yaba, Lagos State, a man called Onuoha Kalu was having a heated argument with Agbai Ezikpe.
Out of excessive anger, Onuoha Kalu unlawfully st@bbed Agbai in the neck with the broken end of a Star Lager beer bottle.
Eyewitnesses apprehended Kalu immediately after the att@ck and held him until the Police arrived at the scene.
Kalu was later arrested and arraigned before the Lagos State High Court.
The prosecution called six witnesses and closed its case.
At the end of the trial, the Lagos State High Court convicted Kalu of mur.der and sentenced him to de@th under Section 319(1) of the Criminal Code of Lagos State.
But that was not the end of the matter.
Olisa Agbakoba took the case all the way to the Supreme Court, where he advanced one of the most interesting arguments ever made in a mur.der case.
According to Agbakoba, the right to life is an absolute, fundamental right.
He tried to convince the Supreme Court that any law permitting a court or the State to terminate the life of its citizens is inherently unconstitutional because it contradicts the primary purpose of constitutional protection of life by that same State.
He focused heavily on the method of execution, particularly hanging, and the "death row phenomenon."
His argument was that de@th penalty should be abolished.
Why?
Because it is degrading and inhumane for the State to keep a convict on de@th row for a prolonged period, combined with the inherent cruelty of hanging.
He convinced the court that such an act offends the dignity of the person, which the State has a duty to protect.
But after Justice Anthony Ikechukwu Iguh, who read the lead judgment, was done listening to the arguments, he rejected them.
The Court held that the prohibition against "inhuman or degrading treatment" could not be read to invalidate the de@th penalty.
Why?
Because the same Constitution permitted the de@th penalty under Section 30 of the 1979 Constitution.
Hence, the execution itself could not legally be defined as an unconstitutional form of torture or degradation.
The Supreme Court emphasized that the abolition of the de@th penalty is a legislative responsibility.
Its role, according to the Court, is to interpret the law as it stands. Any policy decision to abolish capital punishment must originate from the National Assembly through a constitutional amendment.
In the end, Kalu's de@th sentence was affirmed by the Court.
But imagine if Agbakoba had succeeded.
Today, the doctrine of the de@th penalty for cases of mur.der could have been abolished in Nigeria.
It would have been that one argument, one case and one Supreme Court decision that could have completely changed the face of criminal law in Nigeria.
That case is still being cited by lawyers today as Onuoha Kalu v. The State (1998) 13 NWLR (Pt. 583) 531.

Hakeem Baba-Ahmed has done what few in Nigeria’s political elite dare to do: he called out Presidents Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar and told them the hard truths that their families, friends, and sycophants will never whisper in their ears. He stated

"As for my Senior brother, H.E Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, I have supported his presidential bids in the past. I respected his persistence and his decades of experiences running for president. But for 2027, it is a firm NO from me. Forget the age He's presenting in public—we all know the numbers doesn't reflect the reality of his real age".
"The real issue is that Atiku's political ideology remains trapped in the old order".
"At his old age, he should have taken a bow after 2023, transitioned into an elder-statesman role, and thrown his weight behind a younger very competent candidate with a fresh, anti-corruption mindset. Instead, we see the same recycled playbook, the same alliances of convenience, and the same transactional politics tagged around him.."
"The bitter truth is this: Neither Tinubu nor Atiku offers anything tangible to move this country forward".
"One is visibly fatigued warned out; the other is ideologically fossilized and aged".
"Both represent a past that Nigeria desperately needs to outgrow".
"If we continue to recycle these men, we are not voting for progress—we are voting for stagnation, decay, and a continued assault on the hopes of 200 million Nigerians".
My Final Thought On Hakeem Baba Ahmed's warnings :
2027 should not be about "the lesser of two evils." It should be about a definitive break. If either of Tinubu and Atiku are the only options on the ballot, then the election is already lost—before a single vote is cast. We must start now, today, to build and support the right alternative that is credible, competent, and courageous enough to say no to both men. And that new Nigeria would be championed by the partnership between Mr. Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

President Tinubu (@officialABAT)'s office released what it "claims" is a letter from President @realDonaldTrump. The letter is dated July 6, 2026. Today is July 22, 2026. The purported letter is a full 16 days old. Why is President Tinubu releasing an old letter now? Nigerians and the world should ask that question. It seems that, with longstanding drug trafficking allegations concerning President Tinubu now before members of the @WhiteHouse and Congress, Tinubu is trying to convince Nigerians that President #Trump personally respects and endorses him.
We are half expecting the @WhiteHouse to tell us that the letter is a fabrication and that no such letter was sent, but the "purported letter" speaks for itself. There is no image of the actual document, only quotations from it. Something does not add up. Even if the letter is genuine and exists, it reads like a standard boilerplate diplomatic response prepared by White House staff in reply to correspondence from a foreign head of state. Hundreds of similar diplomatic letters are sent every month.
We intend to forward the purported quotations from this "unreleased letter" to our friends at the White House. We believe they will not take lightly any attempt by President #Tinubu to use this purported diplomatic letter to suggest that President Trump condones the longstanding heroin trafficking allegations concerning President #Tinubu. For the record, President #Trump has no tolerance for drug traffickers.

This is Davido’s grandmother, Mrs. Nnenna Esther Adeleke (née Akpara), the first and only woman in Nigeria currently to have given birth to two elected state governors.
One woman, two sons who became governors, another son who became a billionaire businessman, and a grandson who became one of Africa’s biggest music stars.
She gave birth to Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke, the first elected civilian Governor of Osun State, and Ademola Adeleke, the current Governor of Osun State.
She was also the mother of Adedeji Adeleke, billionaire businessman, founder of Adeleke University, and father of Afrobeats superstar Davido.

James Onanefe Ibori was one of those 1999 Governors that was to get rid of after his tenure, so his prosecution didn't waste time at all.
Fortunately, his prosecution later turned out to be one of the most outstanding landmark decisions of the court.
Let me tell you the interesting story.
On December 13, 2007, the EFCC arrested and arraigned James Ibori, who was just bowing out as a former Governor of Delta State.
Ibori was not just arraigned alone.
He was arraigned alongside two other individuals and three corporate entities before the Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna on a 103-count charge.
What did he do exactly?
According to the EFCC, Ibori corruptly enriched himself as a Governor, abused his office, and laundered Delta State treasury.
But then, something very interesting happened.
Ibori's legal team came to the Kaduna Federal High Court and advanced one of the most interesting arguments.
According to Ibori, he acknowledged that the EFCC had the power to try the offences he had been accused of.
However, the alleged crimes were committed exclusively while Ibori was serving as Governor in Delta State, which is located over 700 kilometres away from Kaduna State.
They pointed out that all the witnesses, banks, state records, and government instruments required for a fair trial were located in Delta State.
Hence, forcing them to defend themselves in Kaduna by the EFCC violated their constitutional right to a fair hearing due to the sheer logistical oppression.
But they didn't stop the argument there.
They convinced the court that an attempt to try them in Kaduna instead of Delta State amounted to Forum Shopping.
Now you will ask; what is Forum Shopping?
Forum shopping is the practice of deliberately choosing a specific court, judge, or jurisdiction to file a lawsuit or criminal charge because one party believes it will yield a more favourable outcome.
So in totality, they requested that the presiding judge, Justice Mohammed Lawal Shuaibu, should recuse himself and transfer the case to the Asaba Judicial Division of the Federal High Court, Delta State, where the alleged offences occurred.
The EFCC, on the other hand, argued that by virtue of Sections 250 and 251 of the Constitution, the Federal High Court is statutorily a single court across Nigeria, and that territorial placement is merely administrative, not jurisdictional.
The EFCC convinced the court that they chose Kaduna out of security considerations because if Ibori and others were allowed to be tried in Delta State, where he was highly influential as an immediate former Governor, he could interfere with the justice of the case.
The trial court listened to the arguments and refused to transfer the case.
So Ibori's team appealed to the Court of Appeal.
When the three-man panel of the Court of Appeal led by Baba Alkali Ba’aba finally got to hear the case, it chose the argument of Ibori's team.
According to Justice Amina Adamu Augie, who read the lead judgment, she held that although the Federal High Court has one jurisdiction across Nigeria, its Judicial Divisions exist to bring justice closer to the people and prevent institutional oppression.
Hence, failing to respect boundaries transforms prosecution into victimization.
The court explained that money laundering and corrupt enrichment as a Governor are localized crimes, and since all the evidence, witnesses, and impact were in Delta State, there should be no reason Ibori should be tried in Kaduna.
So, in the end, the Court ordered the EFCC to institute the case in Delta State.
That case later became one of the leading authorities on territorial jurisdiction whenever a crime is committed and the need to try people where they committed the crime.
It is cited by lawyers today as Ibori v. FRN (2009) 3 NWLR (Pt. 1128) 247.

Most people in Northern Nigeria are gaslighting Kwankwaso because he chose Obi, but what they don't know is that, win or lose, Kwankwaso may actually be the biggest beneficiary of this whole alignment.
If and when the OK Movement succeeds in 2027, Kwankwaso will be just one step closer to becoming President as Vice to Obi.
By then, his popularity, coupled with the power of incumbency, will have significantly boosted his chances.
On the other hand, if the vision doesn't come through as planned, then in 2031, he can confidently say that he supported a Southerner in 2027 to complete their turn.
That way, getting support from the South becomes much easier for him.
Kwankwaso is no fool. He has carefully planned ahead of his day, and that is why you see how diligent and consistent he has remained with the cause.
After all, no one makes a king and remains far from the throne.

It seems someone must have told Atiku Abubakar that the greatest thing President Tinubu fears is the interference of a foreign power like the United States. Hence, he is doing everything possible to make that interference happen.
Well, I commend him.
I only hope the person who told him that also told him something else: that even if free and fair elections eventually happen, he may not necessarily be the beneficiary.
At least, if his efforts help to create an atmosphere where Nigerians can truly choose their leaders without interference, intimidation, or manipulation, he may just be paving the way for Peter Obi, who clearly has the people on his side, to always do the needful.
Nevertheless, I commend his efforts.
