Knowledge, they say is POWER. This is not to blame Dr. Tega but had he known...... maybe things would've been different.
As a civil servant(doctors inclusive) legally speaking, when you are ill, you do not go to work to wait for an approval, you stay home. You take yourself away from the place of duty and then you inform the management. This is the law as stated in the PUBLIC SERVICE RULES.

As a matter of fact, when you suddenly fall ill, you have a legal right to be absent for two consecutive working days without needing a formal medical certificate. Your only obligation is to notify your HOD within 24 hours. You do not need a signature to take care of yourself on the first day.

And when your illness persists beyond 48 hours, then you need a medical certificate that is issued by a medical doctor. The administration is legally obligated to excuse your absence. It is an acknowledgment of a medical fact and not a discretionary favour that they can choose to deny. The public service rules are there to protect your livelihood.

If your illness is severe, you are entitled to up to six months on full pay, and if your recovery takes longer, you are entitled another six months on half pay.
This sick leave is separate from your annual and casual leaves, and it excludes the weekends. That means the management can not forcefully deduct your sick leave from your casual and annual leaves and they can't force you to include weekends as part of your sick leave. These PULIC RULES are backed by the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria and any institution that violate them will be sanctioned accordingly.
