Three stories …

His name is Serhii. He’s 25.
Before his injury, he was awarded the Order of the Golden Cross.
Now — multiple shrapnel wounds. One eye couldn’t be saved. Doctors are still fighting for the other.
Twenty-five. Just think about it.

Next to him — an Estonian volunteer, a medic.
Estonia, a country that has been deeply connected to my own life, though I was once told that we’re “so different.”
Four years into the war, I think more and more about how alike we really are…

And the third man — not in the photo.
A volunteer, a small-rank government official who completely breaks the stereotypes about bureaucracy.
He has no weekends. No personal time.
If he’s not doing evacuations, he’s visiting soldiers in hospitals.
He’s our logistical hub.
From him, the guys pick up what we send.

I asked him:
— How do you manage to keep going?
He calmly replied:

“Tanya, every week we transport up to 70 soldiers. If I leave, the system won’t collapse. But it’ll be harder. And I always ask myself — how are my guys out there?”

That question — “how are my guys out there?” — might be the very essence of what the world calls Ukrainian resilience.
