I can’t believe I put myself through this every year. Say what you want but we are two starting tackles away from being a championship level football team. Until then we will continue to blow playoff games like this.
Real training isn’t perfect.
Real training is a good rep, then a bad rep, then an in-between rep, followed by a couple a good reps in a set of 5, and…
THATS OK!
You also don’t want it to be awful.
Good coaches know how to progress and regress when necessary.

Highschool football players,
If your highschool strength coach:
Makes you show up on time,
Holds you accountable,
Harps on technique,
Makes you master basic exercises,
Cares more about FORM than weight,
THANK THEM AND LISTEN TO THEM!!!
Your future college strength coach.
Reality Check
S&C is a small piece of an athlete's life, let alone their sport
For some it's more important than others, but understand it's still 1/24th of their day
Programming Main Lifts in-Season:
- How heavy?
- What sets and reps?
- What percentages?
- How often?
I have a free guide that explains it
With a season-long progression you can run right now
Do these 2 steps and I’ll DM it to you:
1. Retweet this

Most of my offseason groups finished lifts in about 35 minutes including warmups
How long a workout takes is irrelevant
The quality of the work done and the results are what matter
Workouts do NOT need to be an hour long

Sport specific training is a term people still rave about.
It has another term that’s been around forever. It’s just not as flashy:
Sport practice.
In a world where “specific” sport volumes are at an all time high, I can assure you more sport specificity isn’t the answer.
No Derwin James.
No Corey Linsley
No Austin Ekeler.
No Mike Williams.
No Joey Bosa.
And Justin Herbert one-handed beat the Las Vegas Raiders 24-17.
That Week 5 BYE is just what the doctor ordered.
If I had to list enemy #1 of strength and conditioning coaches, it would be getting told our training program isn’t good enough by someone who thinks splat points at Orange Theory are a good measuring stick
Conditioning is best achieved through gameplay.
Spend time during practice running drills that are already familiar to the athlete & push the tempo a bit. This with scrimmages & games should be sufficient.
Be better than mindlessly running athletes until they’re tired.
