If his father had not been a popular Republican New Jersey Governor many years ago, he would have been forced to resign for not doing his job while accepting a $174,000 annual salary with perks. Maybe Platner will win, maybe not, but the idea that this one guy uniquely has done something beyond the pale and electing him will mean a line was crossed seems completely irrational. Donald Trump was elected twice...Bill Clinton was reelected after the Lewinsky scandal. Gavin Newsom, the leading 2028 frontrunner for Dems, has many damaging sexual allegations in his past.

Brett Kavanaugh was appointed to the Supreme Court and Platner's ex, the GOP operative, ran political campaigns to support Kavanaugh and attack his accusers. There are random members of Trump's cabinet with worse allegations against them and yet mainstream media pundits aren't writing about it all the time. If Platner survives (and I have no idea how it will play out) it will probably be because voters noticed this extreme hypocrisy and rejected it.
