#MondayReflection: Parents, children are always watching

School holidays are often the most memorable time of a child's year. Long after they have forgotten many of the lessons they studied in the classroom, they will still remember these weeks.

Some memories will come from family outings, visits to grandparents, football matches, museums, parks, #Umuganda, #CarFreeDay, or simply walking together around the neighbourhood.

But the greatest lessons they learn this holiday will not come from where we take them. They will come from watching us.

Children learn more from our example than from our instructions.

▶️ They notice whether we greet our neighbours with a smile or walk past without acknowledging them.
▶️ They notice whether we throw litter into a bin or onto the street.
▶️ They notice whether we stop at a zebra crossing, obey traffic lights, respect public property, speak kindly to others, and thank the people who serve us.
▶️ They notice whether we queue patiently or try to push ahead.
▶️ They notice how we treat security guards, cleaners, waiters, bus conductors, and strangers.

Long before they become responsible citizens, they become careful observers.

The values that make Kigali special—cleanliness, respect, kindness, discipline, and care for one another—are not inherited. They are demonstrated.

This holiday, spend time with your children.

Read together. Play together. Visit places that inspire curiosity. Walk through our parks. Attend community events. Explore #KigaliYacu together. Listen to their questions. Let them discover new things.

But above all, remember this: You are part of what they are discovering.

One day, your child may not remember every place you visited together. But they will remember the kind of person you were.

And one day, without even thinking about it, they will become that person for someone else.

The future of #KigaliYacu is not only shaped by what we teach our children. It is shaped by what they see us do every single day.

This afternoon, 80 employment support and career guidance personnel drawn from government Ministries, universities, and employment related institutions gathered in Kigali for the official opening of a five day Local Training under the Skills Development and Employment Promotion Project (SEP), delivered in partnership with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the SEP Project Management Consultancy team.

In his opening remarks, the Permanent Secretary of MIFOTRA, @ClementKabiligi, underscored that the training is directly aligned with Rwanda's national development agenda, noting that through SEP and the New KORA digital employment ecosystem, MIFOTRA is working to close persistent gaps in labour market information, improve matching between job seekers and employers, and scale up the reach and quality of Employment Service centers and career guidance services nationwide.

Running from July 27th to 31st, the training covers career guidance strategies and pathways, employment services delivery using ILO and Korea Employment Information Service (KEIS) modules, and the rollout of the New KORA system. The Permanent Secretary called on participants to put this knowledge into immediate use and share it with colleagues, noting that this training marks the first in a series of capacity building sessions planned under SEP, with further sessions scheduled for November and beyond.

Kigali residents turned out for this morning’s bi-monthly #CarFreeDay at KCC Roundabout, demonstrating that healthy living, active lifestyles, and community wellbeing are at the heart of #KigaliYacu.

RBC joined us to remind participants of the importance of supporting people living with chronic illnesses through community-based care that helps ease pain and improve their quality of life.

As Rwanda marks #Kwibohora32, participants also took part in 32 push-ups in tribute to the 32nd Liberation Anniversary. Liberation gave us a new beginning, and protecting that freedom also means protecting our health through regular physical activity and preventing non-communicable diseases.

Exercise is life.
