Uganda’s 1995 constitution has served as a cornerstone of stability and progress for our nation. As we mark 30 years of its enactment, many Ugandans are not only celebrating this milestone but also reflecting on how the Constitution has shaped our present and continues to guide our future. Today, I joined the Center for Constitutional Governance (CCG) and the Uganda NGO Forum at Sheraton Hotel for a dialogue to commemorate three decades of the constitution and to reflect on the past, present and the future of our nation.
While people may view the constitution differently, particularly our elders who experienced previous dispensations, for my generation and those that followed, this is the only constitution we have known. The peace, democratisation, good governance, and economic development we have enjoyed over the years were ushered in under its framework.
Naturally, the constitution has been the subject of intense debate. But that is the very nature of a living document, one that evolves with the times. It is not cast in stone, and thoughtful amendments are part of its growth. Yet, amid these debates, we must not lose sight of the fact that the stability we continue to enjoy as a country is rooted in the enduring spirit of the 1995 Constitution.
I thank @SarahBireete, CCG’s Executive Director for inviting me.
