After Florentino Pérez won today's election, I genuinely thought he was the longest-serving president in Real Madrid history. Then I did five minutes of research and discovered that title belongs to Santiago Bernabéu.

The man served for 35 years straight until he literally died in office in 1978. I had always thought Santiago Bernabéu was just a stadium name. It never once occurred to me that it was a real person.

Santiago Bernabéu was a real person. A footballer, a coach, and then president of Real Madrid from 1943 until he died in office in 1978. Thirty-five years running the same club without stepping down once.

Under him, Real Madrid won 6 European Cups and multiple La Liga titles and became the most feared club on the continent. He also built the stadium himself in 1947, which they later named after him.

Florentino Pérez has 37 trophies and gets all the credit today. But the foundation he is standing on was built by a man most of us only knew as a building."
