ISLAM 1800S TO PRESENT: COLONIAL HUMILIATION, THE REVIVAL OF JIHAD, AND THE UNFINISHED WAR

By the early 1800s the Islamic world had already collapsed under its own weight. Centuries of internal corruption, endless sectarian slaughter between Sunni and Shia, slave-soldier regimes, and economic stagnation left once-powerful empires weak and vulnerable.

European nations simply overtook them in technology, military discipline, and governance. The same Ottoman forces that once besieged Vienna were now losing territory on every front.

In India the Mughal Empire crumbled before British power. North Africa fell under French and Italian control. This was not random humiliation. It was the predictable result of a system built on conquest finally meeting superior force.

Muslim leaders and thinkers refused to examine whether Muhammad was a false prophet. Instead they blamed the loss of power on insufficient devotion to “true Islam.”

The answer they chose was not repentance before Jehovah but a return to the violent model of Muhammad and his companions. That choice produced the modern revival of jihad.

The Wahhabi-Saudi alliance shows the pattern clearly. In the early 1900s Abdulaziz ibn Saud, backed by fanatical Ikhwan warriors indoctrinated in strict Wahhabi doctrine, conquered the Arabian Peninsula through jihad.

They smashed shrines, slaughtered rivals, and imposed their version of seventh-century Islam. When oil wealth arrived in the 1930s the same alliance used petrodollars to export this supremacist creed worldwide through mosques, schools, and scholarships.

The modern Saudi state still rests on that foundation of conquest and religious enforcement. It is not a moderate outlier. It is the successful revival of Muhammad’s Medinan model funded by oil.

Sayyid Qutb and the Muslim Brotherhood took the same doctrine into the twentieth century. Qutb declared that nearly all existing Muslim governments and the entire non-Muslim world lived in jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance).

He called for vanguard groups to separate from corrupt society and wage jihad to overthrow rulers and establish sharia. His writings became the blueprint for al-Qaeda, Egyptian Islamic Jihad, and countless others.

The Brotherhood’s slogan was explicit: “Jihad is our path.” This was not a modern invention. It was a direct reapplication of Quran 9:5 and 9:29.

Quran 9:29 commands: “Fight those who do not believe in Allah or in the Last Day and who do not forbid what Allah and His Messenger have forbidden and who do not adopt the religion of truth from those who were given the Scripture — [fight] until they give the jizyah (poll tax on non-Muslims) willingly while they are humbled.”

The verse does not limit fighting to self-defense. It orders subjugation of Jews, Christians, and others until they submit and pay tribute in humiliation. Quran 9:5 adds the command to kill polytheists after sacred months unless they convert. These are not verses twisted by extremists. They are the plain text that revivalist movements simply obeyed.

The 1947 Partition of India exposed the same theology in action. Muslim leaders demanded a separate state because Islamic doctrine divides the world into dar al-Islam (house of Islam) and dar al-harb (house of war).

Muslims were taught they could not live permanently as a secure minority under non-Muslim rule. The result was one to two million dead in months of massacres, rapes, and forced migrations.

While atrocities occurred on all sides, the driving ideology for Pakistan was Islamic separatism rooted in the Quran’s command structure. Jehovah’s pattern in the New Testament is different. Believers are scattered among the nations as witnesses, not gathered into a religious state enforced by the sword.

Iran’s 1979 revolution brought the same doctrine into state power. Ayatollah Khomeini restored hudud (fixed sharia punishments) including stoning for adultery and amputation for theft. His writings explicitly re-legitimized slavery and concubinage, affirming that Muslim men may own female captives for sexual use.

During the Iran-Iraq war the regime sent waves of young men to certain death with promises of paradise. This was not a betrayal of Islam. It was the reimplementation of Muhammad’s example. In contrast, Jesus confronted a crowd ready to stone an adulterous woman and said, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone.” The Iranian regime revived public stoning in Allah’s name.

In the twenty-first century groups like ISIS and Boko Haram simply followed the same sources more literally. They reopened slave markets, took captives as concubines according to Quran 4:24 and 23:5-6, and justified beheadings and sex slavery directly from the Quran and hadith.

These were not fringe distortions. They were the consistent outworking of the doctrine that the 1800s decline had only temporarily interrupted.

The so-called colonial humiliation was never the root cause. It was the interruption of centuries of Islamic expansion, slavery, and subjugation. When that pressure lifted, Muslims who took their scriptures seriously returned to the original commands.

The war is unfinished because the Quran contains no expiration date on jihad. It continues until the whole world submits to Islamic rule or pays tribute in humiliation. That is why the same patterns keep reappearing from Arabia to Iran to Nigeria to Europe.

The Bible offers a completely different path. Christ commands His followers to love their enemies, pray for those who persecute them, and spread the Gospel by persuasion, not by the sword.

Jehovah calls rulers to justice and mercy, not to religious conquest and the enslavement of the defeated. One system produces perpetual war until dominance. The other produces the offer of forgiveness through the finished work of Christ on the cross.
