So excited that I could contribute to the special Issue #EmergingVoices in #Botany in @AoB_PLANTS. Thanks to the botanical community that helped me to develop this framework and @AoB_PLANTS for the opportunity and this great thread! Check it out! #VascularVariants#plants 🪵🌱

Feels great to collaborate to publish papers as well as to win ping-pong tournaments! Proud of submitting this manuscript with brilliant colleagues and becoming the defending champion of the doubles category (with @genomeinquirer) at @NYUBiology ! 🏓🏆
In this new #Onyenedumlab preprint we show that ectopic vascular cambia are linked to misexpression of conserved KNOX genes in Wisteria vines! Research led by @ilcneto with excellent collaborations with @JLandisBotany, @AnthonyASnead, and @plantevomorph 😀

Dear colleagues, the deadline for abstract submission for the special collection on #methods and #applications on ##Plant Vasculature is coming up (November 20)! Check it out and let us know your questions or requests. 🌱🔬
#Botany colleagues, if you have developed new methods/approaches to investigate #plant#vasculature and want to showcase your technique in a video article, please, take a look at the Collection for JoVE that @JGOnyenedum and I are organizing! 🧵1/4 https://t.co/0y0kMJFlHT
Had alot of fun writing this anatomy- physiology crossover with a great team🌳🫧
https://t.co/rmTdUbUclX Read about the potential roles of the cells surrounding the plant water transport system during drought, in the context of physiology & observations made by Sherwin Carlquist!
It would never have occurred to me that about 14 years after I imaged this section, @Botanical_ would feature research based on that very same sample! Sometimes, being a researcher feels great for the tiniest of things! #Iamabotanist
Serjania pernambucensis shaped my academic career! In 2009, this section (in the photo) not only led me to study the vascular system of woody vines (instead of secretory structures), but it also embodies my main research topic today: ectopic cambia. #MyFavoriteSpecies

Ectopic #cambia: Connections between natural & experimental vascular mutants

The plant used for this cross-section has grown along this fence in the backyard of my first lab in Bahia (Brazil) for a while. Our "accidental" discovery of ectopic cambia in Serjania came when studying their flower biology because they are important species for native bees! 🐝
Medullary bundles are active throughout the plant’s lifespan and have a major contribution to hydraulic conductivity in herbaceous plants. In these plants, the potential conductivity of medullary bundles is practically 50% in relation to secondary vascular tissues.
Here's our new paper with some cool findings about the evolution of plant form and function!
Check it out for some insights into plant development, vascular variants, diversification, and more!
Contrary to our hypothesis (based on a previous study with Nyctaginaceae), diversification rate heterogeneity is not explained by transitions to medullary bundles, but species with this trait have higher diversification rates!
#NYCBotany 🌿No greenhouse space in NYC? No problem! Time to adapt our research to growth chambers.
Today, the #OnyenedumLab celebrates our first batch of plants growing in the newly renovated growth chambers @nyuniversity for the #NSFCAREER project. 🌱
I had the opportunity to attend two excellent seminars this week. Kudos to @Sunil_KumarKR and @PlantEvoDevo for their extraordinary and inspiring work!
Come join our lab at the Yale School of the Environment. We’re hiring a new postdoc to collaborate with engineers and developmental biologists to understand the tradeoffs and constraints in optimizing photosynthesis and leaf biomechanics: https://t.co/kd6ObFDpuK
