A Trump advisor was asked about Congress’s constitutional role in declaring war.

The response:

“Congress does not have a constitutional role in the declaration of war.”

Ezra Klein quoted the Constitution directly:
“The Congress shall have power to declare war.”
Silence.

Then:
“The issue has to do with what was meant by ‘declare.’”

This is the legal theory behind a war that has killed seven Americans, displaced 700,000 Lebanese, mined the Strait of Hormuz, and triggered the largest oil price spike in history.

They don’t know what “declare” means.

The Founders were very clear on what they meant. They had just fought a war started by a king acting alone. They wrote it down specifically so this could never happen again.
