We've tracked 167 fledgling snail kites in an unprecedented effort to determine how natal conditions influence survival. Here's a quick map of where they've gone. Isn't it lovely?
Got to go out with the @ilove2eatsnails crew today onto a property that has kites nesting within it. Always a good day. Chicks that are old enough are measured, weighed, banded, and then placed back on their nests. Will post some photos soon.
A new paper on the continuing saga of endangered snail kites & the exotic apple snail. Kites born in wetlands with exotic snails fledge in higher condition, survive better, & are less likely to leave invaded sites than kites raised with only native snails

It takes a small army to tag and track #SnailKites. We are deploying VHF & GPS/GSM transmitters on juvenile snail kites to better understand movement and survival. The first 2 months after fledging can be a vulnerable time when they are still learning to fly and feed themselves.
Cool #SnailKite nesting behavior - during last year's breeding season, a nest camera recorded a nest collapse after a strong storm rolled in. Days later, an egg appeared on the remaining nest structure! After some nest building, a new nest was formed in the same spot.
Congratulations to @_AlfredoGonz for successfully defending his thesis entitled Investigating Causes of Nesting Failure in Snail Kites: Nest-site Characteristics and Classification Uncertainty. We are so happy for you!!๐๐
