Rachel Reid was interviewed by @CBCNews about her generous donation to the Annapolis Valley Regional Library system:

“I heard about the five branches that were closing, and I just think libraries are so important. I think they’re absolutely an essential service that needs to be properly funded, especially in rural areas and smaller towns.

“I don’t know if I can actually keep these branches open or not, but I wanted to help as much as I could, and I knew that the amount of money that they needed was an amount of money that I could provide.

“I just feel like I had to do it. I don't know what the point is of being a successful author in Nova Scotia if you're not going to use it for good.

"I want to continue to live in Nova Scotia, but I do feel that lately there’s been a lot of government decisions that have made it less appealing to live in Nova Scotia. And this is one of them.

“I want to do what I can to help, but I also think private donations can't replace government policy, which is where this funding should be coming from.

"Really, my goal was to try and do what I could to keep these branches open for now, and then maybe raise enough awareness to make sure that this problem doesn’t happen again when these kinds of decisions are made by the government next year.

"When I was a kid, you know I grew up in Bedford, Nova Scotia, and I was at that Bedford Library all the time taking out as many books as they'd let me at a time and burning through them.

"A lot of those books are what initially inspired me to want be an author. I don't think I'd be an author without my local library."
