J. Lewis Shuck had no money to give to a missions offering so he dropped this note in the plate: “I give myself.” He would serve as one of Southern Baptists’ 1st missionaries.

His wife was the 1st American woman to serve as a missionary to China where she died at the age of 27.

Dr. Graves was the longest-serving Southern Baptist missionary, with 56 years on the field. He never retired and served until the very end of his life. He came to Canton (now Guangzhou), China in 1856 at 23 and died there in 1912 (the same year as Lottie Moon) at 79.
