VIDEO | Kolkata, West Bengal: All India bank strike announced over demand for five-day working week.

Subhrojyoti Chatterjee, vice president, All India Bank Officers' Confederation, says, "The main demand for tomorrow's bank strike is five-day banking. The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has already declared another three-day strike on the 28th, 29th and 30th of this month. If the issue is not resolved by the government, there will be a continuous strike from October 26. This is the main agenda. There are many other demands, but five-day banking is the main one. You know that the government had already accepted our proposal through the bipartite agreement and the signing of the salary revision in 2024, the last salary revision of the banking industry. We already have an agreement with the government on five-day banking..."

The demand for a 5 Day Work Week in banks is not new. It already stands agreed upon in the Bipartite Settlement of March 2024. What remains is its long-pending implementation.

At the same time, the unilateral and discriminatory PLI system must be abolished and replaced with a fair, transparent and inclusive framework for all employees, recognising the collective effort behind every institution’s performance.

Hardworking bank employees are not asking for privilege. They are asking for implementation of an agreement and equality in reward.

A motivated banking workforce strengthens Indian banking and the nation.

A rested workforce serves the public better. With staff shortages and rising stress, 5-day banking is a service-quality issue, not a “perk.” UFBU has pursued this since 2015; IBA has recommended it to the Government (MoU 07-12-2023), and it’s included in the 12th Bipartite/9th Joint Note (08-03-2024), pending clearances.
Let’s finish what’s already agreed.
