Imagine America after 9/11. Thousands dead, cities in shock, a nation under attack. Now imagine if Europe had rolled out the red carpet for Osama bin Laden. Imagine if the world had demanded that the United States surrender part of its territory “for peace.” Imagine if they told America it had no right to fight back, no right even to start a war against bin Laden and Afghanistan.

Imagine if world leaders had declared that bin Laden was their friend. Imagine if they had lifted sanctions on him while you buried your dead. Imagine if one of Europe’s highest leaders had danced with a picture of bin Laden inside the European Parliament. Imagine if, on top of that, he had even phoned the Nobel Committee to ask for the Peace Prize — just as Trump actually did. Imagine if your allies had cut off promised aid and shared intelligence with Al Qaeda.

That is what Ukrainians live through today. They stood with America after 9/11, but now they watch as America debates whether to stand with them while Russia kills their children, flattens their cities, and tries to erase their nation. And every time Trump, JD Vance, or Hegseth open their mouths, the world sees the United States in the same grotesque mirror I’ve just described with bin Laden: excuses for an invader, betrayal of allies, and cowardice.

Seen from the outside, it is shameful. For Americans, it should feel personal, because this is not just about Ukraine — it is about whether the United States still stands for freedom, or whether it will be remembered as the nation that turned its back on its friends.

And history will not be kind. The history books will write so harshly about this era that people with the names Trump, Vance, and Hegseth will have to change their names to escape the shame.

Putin’s proposals are followed by my comments:

1. No ceasefire before a comprehensive deal – Trump has backtracked on many occasions of imposing tough sanctions if Russia did not agree to a ceasefire.
2.Full Ukrainian withdrawal from Donetsk and Luhansk – Kyiv will not agree to give up 6,600 sq kms of Ukrainian land that Russia is unable to militarily conquer. In 2014, Russia promised safe passage for Ukrainian forces to withdraw from Donetsk but then attacked them, killing 300 and wounding hundreds more at Ilovaysk. Ukrainians will not forget Putin' treachery.
3.Russia freezes lines in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia – they are already frozen.
4.Ukraine regains parts of Sumy and Kharkiv – Russia occupies only 440 sq. kms and is in retreat.
5.Formal recognition of Russian sovereignty over Crimea – Kyiv has always said since 2014 it will not take this step.
6.Partial sanctions relief – Europeans will not agree to this.
7.Ukraine barred from NATO – NATO already has a Russian veto in place since 2008. Obama, Biden and Tump and all German Chancellors have opposed Ukraine joining NATO. Ukraine's parliament will not find a 2/3 vote to remove NATO membership as a goal from the constitution.
8.Possible security guarantees – Ukrainians do not trust Americans as they remember Obama’s betrayal in 2014. They even more do not trust Trump who always sides with Russia. In 2014, Russia violated the 1997 Ukrainian-Russian treaty on their border and the Budapest Memorandum's upholding of Ukraine's territorial integrity when Ukraine was a neutral state. Since 2022, Russia has conducted military aggression and committed 170,000 war crimes. Get real, Ukraine will never trust Russia again. Only 3% of Ukrainians trust Russia (93% do not). 84% of Ukrainians hold a negative view of the Russian people. https://t.co/352nuD28qy.
