As of today, AI led productivity gain in software development estimates are (at best) 25% to 50% as measured on an end to end product basis (prototyping is much much faster now but finished product requires a lot more human work).
A 10x or 100x productivity leap could happen (I believe it will happen, see below) but it has not happened _yet_.
The _current_ challenge posed by AI:
a) server/memory and hardware prices are way up (4-5x in a year for servers) driven by the monster AI data center build out.
b) AI token spending per engineer is way up (those productivity gains are costly!)
c) Hosting open weight models needs expensive GPUs.
So we have revenue growth but costs have grown much much faster.
Layered on top of that is the geopolitical uncertainty. As one example, the Middle East is a major market and the prolonged war is not good.
The US stock market is in a monster bubble and it is a mistake to think of stock prices as indicative of future prosperity - the GFC of 2008-9, dotcom bust of 2001-2 as wall as the 1980s Japan bubble all demonstrate that point.
Now the 10x productivity leap in software. I believe it is coming because of what is happening in the mathematics world. The crucial link is auto-formalization, or formal verification of code. Mathematics theorems are formalized in Lean and proofs are verified by the Lean verifier - Lean is a programming language.
LLMs do not verify the proof, they generate it to be verified by the Lean verifier and once you have the advanced reasoning capable LLM and Lean verifier in a feedback loop and give plenty of compute, magic happens.
That formal automated verification mechanism is coming to LLM generated software. That is the basis of the 10x or 100x prediction. The analogy is handloom weaving vs powerful machine looms of code.
So it is the combination of current data center/AI costs, geopolitical uncertainty and the potential of a 10x or bigger leap in software productivity driven by advances in automatic program verification. These are all challenges to software jobs, and that is why we have called for reinvention internally.
Apparently, this is one of the earliest known photographs of the sacred Kedarnath Dham, taken in 1882.
Couldn’t take my eyes off it.
No roads. No railheads. No helicopters.
Just the abode of Lord Shiva, cradled by the Himalayas
Back then, the yatra demanded time, endurance, & faith. The journey wasn’t incidental; it WAS the pilgrimage.
Today, access is easier. And that’s a good thing because it opens the experience to many more.
But perhaps something still needs preserving?
The ability to slow down & savour the experience of traveling.
Because journeys are about who we become along the way.

I am in Jodhpur for the Maheshwari Global Convention event and I am talking to young entrepreneurs from the community today.
I studied in Chennai in a government-aided free Tamil medium school funded by the late Shri Jaigopal Garodia-ji. He was born in poverty in Sujangarh, Rajasthan and never went to school due to poverty. At age 10, he migrated to Kolkata in search of a livelihood, and eventually migrated to Chennai and found business success. He donated all his wealth to his charitable foundation that has funded education generously. A lot of schools in Chennai, particularly schools that poor and lower middle class kids attend, have been funded by him. I owe him a huge debt of gratitude.
My goal today is to urge the entrepreneurs to invest in long term patient R&D projects and think of it as the continuation of the educational and social service to the nation that entrepreneurs from Rajasthan are so famous for.
Special day and hence a special beginning.
They say every ending will have a new start, my time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today🤓.
Would like to thank all the franchisees for all the wonderful memories and relationships over the years and most importantly the @IPL and the @BCCI for what they have given me until now. Look forward to enjoying and making the most of what’s ahead of me🙏

Translation services are now common on phones, but another language barrier is being broken with Google Meet’s new real-time tools, revealed at #GoogleIO.
Look how seamless it sounds!! 🤯
They just introduced real-time translation in Google Meet.
No lag. No subtitles. Just live audio — in your language.
You speak English — they hear Spanish. Instantly.
Global communication just leveled up.

The intense clouds which is parked outside Chennai coast is consolidating, become intense and ready to move into City. This will bring the next round of very heavy across the City. Just in the last 6 hours some places have crossed 150 mm in Chennai. Particularly North Chennai and Central Chennai areas. From Mid night many stations have crossed 200 mm.
The incoming rains looks a long one and we might cross 250 mm with this one from mid-night particularly North Chennai. With night approaching, clouds will get even stronger !!!!

The rise of AI technology and deepfakes pose a large risk to the financial services industry.
The tipping point for Indian financial services businesses was when onboarding became completely digital, thanks to Aadhaar, etc. For businesses onboarding a new customer, an important aspect is ensuring that the documents and the person opening the account are real.
The normal process that's followed today is to fetch the ID or address proof data from the source using Digilocker and or Aadhaar. Also, match the face from this ID proof with the person opening the account through a webcam. Today, we have a bunch of checks in place to check for liveliness and if the other person is real or not.
But as the deepfakes improve, I think it will only become harder over time to validate if the person on the other side is real or AI-generated. This problem will be bigger for banks that have more stringent regulatory requirements during onboarding.
It will be interesting to see how the regulations around this evolve. Going back to the physical way of opening accounts will bring the growth of the entire sector to an abrupt stop.
And the video isn’t me; it is a deep fake. 😬
15 years ago, I helped design Google Maps.
I still use it everyday.
Last week, the team dramatically changed the map’s visual design.
I don’t love it.
It feels colder, less accurate and less human.
But more importantly, they missed a key opportunity to simplify and scale.
–––
Google Maps has started to widely roll out updated map colors:
- All roads are now gray
- Water changed from blue to teal
- Parks and open spaces are now mint green
It seems the goal was to improve usability and make the maps more readable.
Admittedly, I do think major roads, traffic, and trails stand out more now.
But the colors of water and parks/open spaces blend together.
And to me, the palette feels colder and more computer generated.
But color choices aside…
If the goal was better usability, the team missed a big opportunity:
Google Maps should have cleaned up the crud overlaying the map.
–––
So much stuff has accumulated on top of the map.
Currently there are ~11 different elements obscuring it:
- Search box
- 8 pills overlayed in 4 rows
- A peeking card for “latest in the area”
- A bottom nav bar
(Personally, I would LOVE to see usage metrics for all these overlays.)
The map should be sacred real estate.
Only things that are highly useful to many people should obscure it.
There should be a very limited number of features that can cover the map view.
And there are multiple ways to add new features without overlaying them directly on the map.
–––
Here’s how it could look:
- Keep the search box
- Keep the bottom bar
- Remove everything else from the map
- Roll the most used features into the bottom bar
- Bury the less used features elsewhere in the app
I assume the search box and directions are top priority and should remain prominent.
My Location and map layers (satellite, traffic, etc.) could move to the bottom bar.
The explore overlays (restaurants, gas, etc.) could live in the bottom bar in “Explore” and open as cards.
The additional space in the bottom bar could be used for Saved, as a “More” option, or could be removed entirely.
There are many variations of how features could be arranged.
But the key points are:
- Dramatically simplify
- Strongly prioritize map visibility
- Bury legacy and low use features
–––
It’s normal for products to accumulate features over time.
But it’s also super important to stay vigilant and continually clean them up.
In many ways, it’s interesting to see history repeating itself.
In 2007, I was 1 of 2 designers on Google Maps.
At that time, Maps had already become a cluttered mess.
We were wedging new features into any space we could find in the UI.
The user experience was suffering and the product was growing increasingly complicated.
We had to rethink the app to be simple and scale for the future.
It seems like it’s time for Google Maps to do this again…

Well played Virat.
It took me 365 days to go from 49 to 50 earlier this year. I hope you go from 49 to 50 and break my record in the next few days.
Congratulations!!
