How India saved its tigers - and lions and rhinos and elephants.
India is astonishing successful in protecting animals.
In the 1970s the tiger seemed to be heading towards extinction. Today the big cat is thriving. Over the past two decades numbers have more than doubled to nearly 3,700. So effective has India been that it agreed to export tigers to Cambodia, where they had gone extinct. Project Tiger has been a roaring success.
A few years ago Gujarat opened a reserve to accommodate its expanding population of Asiatic lions. The cat, unique to India and Gujarat, is growing in numbers. I visited the region this June.
The chief minister of Assam recently said that his state had in the previous year recorded zero cases of poaching related to its large and growing population of rhinos.
Since 2022 India has been importing cheetahs from Africa in the hope of re-establishing a species that went extinct within its borders in 1952.
These are shining success stories in a world where human - animal conflicts normally ends with the killing of the animals. That’s for sure nearly always the case in the West.
* Public sentiment is one reason India is so good at protecting its animals. Hindu dharma is based upon the idea that humans are part of nature, not above nature. God is even half human, half animal as in the case of Ganesha and Hanuman. This matters also today.
* Indian leaders value protecting animals. More than two millennia ago Ashoka issued edicts against hunting. Indira Gandhi launched Project Tiger. Narendra Modi’s passions include wildlife photography.
* Policy design. Programs organized around clear, limited objectives with dedicated teams are effective. Some of India’s biggest public-health feats, such as eradicating polio and quickly rolling out vaccines during the covid-19 pandemic, were achieved in this way.
It’s extraordinary that the people and politicians of a country with numerous challenges can come together to achieve something as selfless as protecting other creatures. India’s wildlife conservation is an example of Bharat at its finest. The world should take note!
