@rolandbouman My thoughts exactly. Can't believe people are acting like the "syntax" of coalesce is some sort of arcane knowledge and not just one of the more common SQL functions.
For what it's worth, I can't imagine a scenario where this isn't a hollow threat. Valve would face immediate backlash if they delisted such a big game from their storefront.
Newly revealed court documents from an ongoing antitrust lawsuit claim that Valve once threatened to remove Rainbow Six Siege from Steam after Ubisoft tried selling the game at a lower price on its own storefront, Uplay.
According to the reports, Ubisoft introduced a cheaper “Starter Pack” version of Rainbow Six Siege outside of Steam.
Valve allegedly warned Ubisoft that the game could be removed from Steam if the pricing difference wasn’t addressed. Ubisoft changed course, and the game remained on the platform.
There are several actual monopolies in the tech world that come to mind. Steam is not one of them. I do not understand why this narrative is being pushed so hard.
Valve co-founder Gabe Newell responded to accusations that Steam operates as a monopoly in the PC gaming market
Addressing the criticism, Newell said gamers have “plenty of options” when buying games.
According to him, players can choose from many digital stores, including rival platforms and stores run by game publishers themselves.
Valve says Steam’s success comes from a service that both gamers and developers willingly choose.
@valigo Plausible, I don't think you need the tinfoil hat for this one. AAA is in trouble in general, but even if Steam reduced the cut to 0%, it would only slightly delay the inevitable.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang just called the idea of AI replacing software engineers "complete nonsense"
"The number of software engineers is actually increasing... if you can hire a software engineer and generate $9 trillion worth of productive work, why wouldn't you want to hire more?
If that line were flat, then obviously people would hire fewer software engineers. But because the output is so incredible, people want to hire more
This is going to show up in our economy somehow, soon. Useful AI has arrived"
@valigo I can feel the pendulum swinging back.
By the way, if someone told me a couple years ago that the indistry would go apeshit for LOC... I would probably have believed them, but that's just because I have a low opinion of the industry.
